A PRESENTATION.
On Saturday afternoon. a numbor of' farmers and townsmen of ■ Eltham- met to sa/. farewell to Mr. A./Naughton (lato provincial secretary of tho •' Now Zealand • Farmers Union), and present him with a token of their esteem. Mr. B. Dive, M.l'., presided, and apologised for} the absence of Mr. J* Quin (chairman County:' Council), ...Mr.; T. 0. Hodgson (chairman. Bacon Company), both of .whom were attending meetings of their respective bodies, and 'Messrs. W- J» tram, L. Blennerhassett, J. Carter, I. Saun-' derson, J. Best, J. Robson, J. Thomson, A. Pease, C. Potts, R. H. Campbell, S. King, E. It. Briant, It. J. Rnucky, and the Hon. W. Carncross, M.L.C. The chairman said that the duty of making a presentatijn to. Mr. Naughton was a very pleasant one, •as ho was ..surO :■'; that /; Mr. Naughton had gained the esteem of the residents of the. town and district.They de-. sired ,in sonie small measure to show, their appreciation of Mr. Nauglitori's -'qualities;.as a citizen', and on behalf of the; residents of ■the town and district he: asked him r -, to-. accept a' purse of sovereigns, and on behalf of the local branch of the Farmers' Union a case of pipes and'j letter;of appreciation of his-services to that body.- , Mr II; Forsyth said that Mr. Naughton had' done* a< great - deal of good work, and had, : mado. many friends.. It was to' be regretted/that a man of,his -stamp was.leaving them. ' . V Mr.. J. Christoffel endorsed-the , remarks of. the chairman and Mr. Forsyth, and said that Mr; Naughton. .would be missed, - especially by the farming community. Ho expressed' fhis- best, wishes, for both Mr. and Mrs. Naughton, and hoped that some 'time in the. future .they would return to -Eltham. ; . ; // •The health of Mr. and Mrs. Naughton was then honoured. .' •' 'Mr.; Naughton, in acknowledging the compliment; paid him, and in returning thanks for tho handsome gifts, said that lie failed to understand what he had done to deserve the;honourA M to the work of the. Farmers'■ Union,; he: said/that the burden of that- workr had: fallen, upon those, who -gave/ their , services .■ gratuitously,' and who' had spent time, and-; money .in doing ; it. He trusted. that, 1 - now that the/ union, ,liad v got into .such .a" good 1 position,, they would, not allow it to go back. - ■• O.ther toasts - honoured, were 'The Member for Egmoiit"; and' Mr., Naughton's/ successor, (Mr. J. B. Sim). ' "They. v were:responded'!to by Mr. Dive and Mr. Sim respectively.
