.-■ The fortnightly meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was held last night;'there being.preseut: Mr. W. H. Russell (Deputy-Mayor), and; Councillors. Ward,. - O'Sulliyan, Wildsmith, Hughes, Koss, Baldwin, Judd, and Hodgins. ; ..'Tne resignation of Mr: H.E: Eobinson, as clerk, who has . accepted an 'appointment as clerkof the, Akitio County Council, was received, and it was decided to forward him a suitable testimonial.. It. was • decided to promote Mr. L.-.S. Curtis'and call applications for a junior. ' .'.'.■' Mrs.' M. J. Eoutley i applied for .a license for the Epad,'providing, 'accomriiodatioh.'for.'Sp; persons. '.'.The engineer •reported favourably, and; the: application was granted.- :./ :.. ; .-' . : .'-.'■. '.- ■„ .: ■■ : . ;-. The: Christchurch, City • Council wrote in- re : ference to-Section 25 of.the Local Bodies Loans Amendment, Act; jI9OS, which provides, that the Publio Trustees : alone maybe appointed commissioner of the sinking funds, advanced the. opinion 'that the provision is unnecessary, and will operate prejudicially in. the interests iof Ideal bodies. They asked the co-operation ot the.council in .opposing it. > '-;.'. ■. Counoillor Eoss moved that.the council,give its hearty, support :'te'the proposal. He characterised the attempt as ,a back-door method of the Government-to get hold of. local bodies' funds when money was .needed. . . .'. Wilford ■ wrote preferring to' the ."provisions of Section 7 of the" Hutt Eoad' and Eailways Improyement Act, 1903, and suggesting that a-close watch should be kept on the ■ work of the construction of tho Hutt.Eoad, as evidence will be wanted later on when the apportionment takes place under Section 8, which appoints a> commission to apportion the cost. Councillor Ward considered- that the-council should know the total cost. 'He thought it could, be done at half the ''money it. was costing the Government. ■ ' ,'' ". : ' The Deputy-Mayor remarked, .that; only the local body in whose district land was reclaimed would, benefit By thejsale of the. land. • Councillor Ward expressed surprise at this, and-remarked that it would follow that the Orislow Borough would reap all the benefit. r ■: It was decided to.thank ; Mr.^Wilford, butio, take rib.action, .'■,..' : ' '•■ : The Wellington Council notified its intention to apply to .his Excellency the Governor ,for a : warrant authorising,the construction ,of ,tlie. bridges over v the Hutt 'and Waiwetu '■ Eivers, and apportioning the cost thereof among.the local'bodies,.interested;—Eeceiyed. > 'Mrs..
