MR. MACKENZIE'S VIEWS.
WHAT THE COMMERCE DEPARTMENT SHOULD DO. (B* TEIEGIUriT— FKESS /SSOCriTIOH.) Christchurch, February 6. The Hon D. Buddo was entertained ab a complimentary social at Kaiapoi last night, and was presented with an artistically illuminated "address, handsomely framed. Tho Hon. T. Mackenzie, in the course of a responso to the toast of the Ministry, expressed the pleasuro which he felt at being present to do honour to his friend and cof league, Mr. Buddo. He was a conscientious, clean-lmng, honest man, and with such a foundation there should be no fear as to what the results would be. Some remarks had been passed about the connection of tho Scotsmen in the Ministry with the future finance of the country. He was satisfied that the men who were at the helm of public affairs would see that the finances of the Dominion wore earned on on sound economio lines. They knew the causes which led to the temporary depression which had been supposed to bo in .the. air, although it was his own belief ..that such depressions brought about a much* sounder state of business than what unbounded prosperity brought to a community. A depression brought people to their senses. He had,, the greatest possible confidence m this grand country., They talked of depression when they wore export, ing £20,000,0C0 of produce in the year. 'Jhat, however, was no justification of undue expenditure, but tho men who controlled the aftairs of the Dominion would not deserve the name of men if they could not ifdminister them so as to bring some prosperity to the whole of '.the. community.... ;; , ■~.,.
