Yesterday, in view of the fact that a High School .girl headed the Junior Scholarship J list, the Education Board submittedJ;o their solicitors 'tho question whether under the board's scholarsbp , 'regulations the board was under ' an. obligation < to' grant junior' scholarships according to the result/of the highest marks obtained, notwithstanding that, the scholars are from tho high schools. The solicitors' opinion (given this morning) was,in the affirmative. The chairman (the Hon. T. Fergus) said < they had nothing to do but proceed to allot the scholarships./ At the, same, time, in justice to themselves and -the cause of eduoation, tho board should represent to the Jlinister -the faots of. the case, explaining that, in tbeir opinion it would not be doing ■what,' Parliament intended if theso junior . scholarships were awarded to any l)ut prim- - ary, school pupils. ' > ' u The Rev. V. B. Fraser thought'the bourfl would be unanimous on that point. At the \ Tight-moment ne would give notice to move 1 that a committee be appointed to consult tho inspectors.and report as to what should bo done in thb future.
