1 ' '- ■ SUGGESTIONS BY SIR ROBERT :-V:- STOUT. , Ibi TELEGSirH.—erKcur, coREKsrONnsNT.I , Auckland, January 26. : Speaking at the University Senate on the motion to admit students to a university career oh - a headmaster's certificate, the Chancellor -(Sir Robert Stout) said that the Seriate should approach the question : in this way:" ,Was the university to have headmaster' s - - certificates' from any ■ school ? If hot,-and'if tho university was to-select the schools, t-hero would be extraordinary' difficulties. It ':faised' tho question 'of denominationalism, which ruined education the' world over. There had.been no attempt on the part, of' the .university to direct secondary, education? into" any particular channel: The question was-whether the senate should give its examinations to people over whom it had no control?- AYere they to allow persons to pass a,university examination who had not been examined'by the university examiners? - .His, own proposal-was, the Chancellor contended, much: better. Ho would huvo one examination _for:the Dominion at one time, on which candidates should qualify for a leaving certificate,: entrance to the university or the Civil Service, and university scholarships. Sir Robert Stout denied, thatall • scholarships could hot be apportioned on thei one examination paper.
