Arthur Siyeatmau, D.D., Anglican ' Archbishop of Toronto, and Primate of all Canada. The Most Key. Arthur Sweatman, was the. son of the late Dr. John Sweatman, an eminent •physician of. tho Middlesex Hospital. :Ha Was born on November 19,. 1831, and was educated at private schools and at. University College, Loudon. Ho ■ afterwards went up to' Christ's College, Cambridge, : where he ■ graduatedß. A., being .senior, uptime in the ■ mathematical trjpo.s, in ISO, and M.A.in 1862. He was ■ ordained deacon in 1559 and priest in 18C0. Iq 18G5: ' he was'invited by Bishop Helihiuth to' take the headmastership of Hellmuth. College, .London, in the pi-ovinco of Ontario, In 1872 he.became 'examining chaplain to tho-Bishop of Huron and rector :of Grace Church, Brantford, in the province of Ontario, which living he resigned in 1870. He was secretary of the; Diocesan Synod, from 1872 to 1879; secretary to the Canadian Housa of Bishops from 1873 to 1879; capon of Huron from 1575 to. 1876; and AnShdeacon of Brant and assistant rector of Woodstock, Ontario, from "1876 to 1879, In 1871 he' became mathematical find' science• mastor in Upper Canada College, Toronto, Bishop Bethuno of 'Toronto died on February 3, 18/9, and Archdeacon Sweatman was.elected to succeed him,' and was consecrated Bishop of Toronto ou May 1, 1879, in' St. James's Cathedral, Toronto. In the same year ho took the degree of D.Bv at ■ Cambridge, aud Trinity College, Toronto, conferred on him tho honorary degree of D.C.L. in 1882. Under.Bishop Sweatman the diocese has 'been-thoroughly worked. A See house was built in 188G; a branch of the. woman's Auxiliary of the .Domestic and Foreign Missionary ■ Sooiety was established; regular contributions .to foreign missions. were .collected, and• many new churohes wero built.
