SWIMMING RACES.
THE SWIFTS CLUB CARNIVAL. HEALY DEFEATS FREYBERG. ' A howling northerly wind and drizzling rain were not sufficient to make the Swifts Amateur Swimming Club postpone their tenth annual carnival, which was held at the To Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon, nor were the wretched weather conditions enough to. keep something like throe hundred enthusiasts, amongst whom wore a number of ladies, from attending the. carnival. The water, was very rough and against fast times, 'but, taken right through, the carnival was a>successful one in spite of the raging elements. The principal event on . the programme was the 220 yards inter-club handicap, which was given a special interest because of tho fact that R. Healy; late of New South Wales, and B. C. Freyberg were meeting m this event for' the first time. Eight competitors lined up on the starting-hoard, and the two limit men had negotiated 60 yards before Freyberg and Healy were given the-signal to go. Both champions entered the water at tho same time, and swam, stroke for stroke for the first 45 yards. At the 50. yards tnrn_ Healy had the slightest advantage, but his opponent picked up on the turn. The next stretch saw each man favoured in turn' as he got on' top of a roller,.hut at the 100 yards they were still together. From this.point on, however. Healy forged ahead very slightly until at 150 yard's he'had about 3" feet to the good. In the succeeding, fiftythe ex-Naw South Welshman increased his lead, and before he turned into the final 20 yards it was apparent that he must win comfortably, as he was swimming as strongly and confidently as he did in the first 50 yards, whilst Freyberg was showing signs of wear andtear at 190 yards, although he improved again,in the last 30 yards. Healy got home first with about five yards to spare, 'and was cheered for his fine cerformance. The winner's. time, : 2min. 53sec, is very good' oonsidering_the heavy. going. ' Freyberg's time was 2min.. 59sec. The two leaders made the pace too warm for the others,- several of whom pulled out at 200. yards. "Watson gave up before this—at 110 yards, and Ward, who wai lying .third, retired at 190 yards. Probably the most exciting race of., the dn,y was the 100 yards inter-club handicap,, which saw nine men in the final. Hanna. Evenson, and Wilton were leading at the end. offthe first fifty, with Brice, Ronayrie, and Picot corning up fnst in the rear.."With 30 ynrils still to go Evenson and Hanna '.were; still in front, but they were tiring, whilst the Thorndon trio were coming along "at-a' .exeat rate. In the last.ten yards it appeared* that Picot and Brice must fkht out- first place, with Ronayne and Evenson next. Brico. was swimming- n great• race.- arid had just drown even with Picot when the scratch man, Ronayne came with a brilliant dash . and won by a touch. A couple of inches only separated Brico'and Picot. The 50 - yards ladies' bracelet brought out a bij; field, .and the final was won by R. Lewis, who led all the way suirV won by nbont.three, feet from; Anbrey'_Smith, who had had a' mnatvay victory in'his hent, hot who tired in the Jasf ten;yards of the final. L. Armstrong accounted for the 50 yards junior handicap, putting in a strong dash in the.final ten yards, pnd winning bv. a couple of yards-from B. Hurley. H. K. Johnston carried off the 50 yards maiden handicap, beating W. Johnstone by :a. few inches. The springboard diving competition was won by C. Moore, who was closely pressed by Rot Nelson. Six teams entered, fnr. tho ■ rolay race, which .nrove'l an easy for the Old Bovs' Footbnll Club team..
