EAST COAST ; BAYS. CARGO. .On Monday, the . Union Company's Bteamer Monowai, which leaves for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland, will take cargo for East Coast Bays, the connection of steamers being made at Napier. ~'■ TPEAKINA,' LEFT CAPETOWN. ' ■'. A Press Association telegram from Christchurch reports that : the New Zealand Shipping Company s steamer Turakina resumed her voyage from Capetown on-Thursday for Wellington. lONIC,'DUE TUESDAY. ,Oablod advice received by the local agents reports that the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's liner, fi.M.S. lonic, left Hobart at 11 a.m. yesterday, in continuation of her voyage from London to Wellington. The vessel has a large number of passengers for Dominion ports, and is due here on Tuesday. . A LAKGE FREIGHT. ~'•'... According to an exchange, the: steamer Knight of the Garter, which left Melbourne last week, shipped IU3.CGO bags of wheat and 1500 tons' of bunker coal, .making a total of 10.7C0 tons of freight.. This h? reported to be the largest cargo of wheat yet shipped from the Commonwealth, beating Sydney's record of 62,000 bags, and<the Victorian record of 57,000' bags.■.- ■•.,.' ".. ■''"■ i:iMpSN.brif&jMEroßi : iNQTjmTr.^:;". i It is reported that an. inquiry, r wilLshortly bo held concerning the conduct'of'the captain of a certain collier in giving his navigating officer a. wrong chronometer... The chronometer, .which was three minutes out at the commencement of the voyage, was losing three'seconds .daily, and had tho error not been discovered might have been tho cause of disaster. ACETYLENE GAS ON STEAMERS; The' Eteanier Seabird, which lias.' taken the place of the ketch Dart in the Hobart-Dunalley trade, has been . fitted with an acetylene gas plant, and is the first steamer in the.Derwent Eiver trado to be so lighted (says nn exchange), the work was carried out by the engineer of the vessel (Mr. Gulliver). • It is intended to lay. the gas on to tho masthead and side lights.
KAIAPOI SHIPPING'TKABE; .; CaptainW. V. Bindon has informed a northern exchange that the new coastal steamer for Kaiapoi is well under way at the. builders in Ire,n,j T-he keel.is laid, and the 'framework completed. She as to be twin-screw, with triple expansion engines, developing a speed of 11 knots. Her total carrying capacity will be SCO tons. She will enrry 200 tons on a draught of 6ft. Bin., and 450 on Bft. 10m., and will be one of the finest steamers of .her size on the Now Zealand coast. The launching will take place early in March' and the now steamer- will then be towed over to the Clyde to have her engines put in by Messrs. Boss and Duncan, Ltd., of Goran, Glasgow. She will have 700 horse-power and ample boiler capacity. Last Tuesday tho Kaiapoi trader Wootton was rescued from her perilous position in the Waimakanri Elver, and returned to Lyttolton on Wednesday. ■'.... ..■•■' WORLD'S GREATEST' ORTJISEIt. . Next month tho world's greatest cruiser will be laid down at Devonpnrt Dockyard for the British government. The vessel is to be an improved Invincible, and of hitherto unprecedented power,.and possibly with 13in. armament. No other nation has in hand a.vessel of this class anoVsho will be longer than ;many. of the battleships recently launched.' The speed is' set downi at 28 knots, but an extra couple aro confidently anticipated. There have' been many erroneous statements current as to her dimensions, ljut an approximately accurate detail is given by the "Western Morning News," as follows: — , ' , Invincibles. New Ship. Length ... ... ... 530 ft. 570 ft. £? am - — ... 78ft.6in.. ..79ft.to80ft. Displacement ... ... 17,250 tons 18,000 tons Horse-power., ... ... ill.cco 45,000 Speed ' ...... .... 25knots 28knotS- ,. . ON THE LAY-TO BERTH. , An English exchange reports that the task of the chronicler who takes shipping as his text is not one to be envied just now. He is perpetually dealing ■with new phases of a depression which is more, acute than any which this generation has witnessed.. A little while back it was suggested that there were certain signs of improvement, although it was difficult to locate them. To-day such shipbuilding revival as there was has apparently spent itself, and Sir Christopher Furness stands out as almost a solitary optimistic figure. Meanwhile idle tonnage is accumulating at a rate which gives cause for reflection. Particular trades necessarily have a close time during the ice months, even though ice-breakere nowadays do a good deal in the way of keepinc ports open for shipping. Consequently there >is nothing at all-startling in finding a consider-' able number of tramp steamers tied up' to tho buoys for tho winter.. But what is suggestive is tho large aud increasing proportion of vessels which aro lying-up. It bears no relation to normal winter procedure, but indicates a dearth of employment at payable rates in almost every branch of the shipping trade. A truly melancholy report is that which emanates from Newcastle. It is to the effect that 93 steamers, of a carrying capacity of something like 186,000 tons are laid up in the Tyne, and that more would be glad to join them if only there were room They are tramps and colliers of an ordinarv type, for the most part, but there are a few bi'c cargo liners among them.
Last night the departure of the Union Company's steamer Pnteena for Nelson, direct was postponed from 6 p.m. till 9 p.m. Mr. E. T. Gard joined the Warriroo yesterday aR fourth officer in place of Mr. Sutherland who joints the Arahura to-day as third" officer Mr. Davis, third, officer of the latter boat took up a similar position in the Manuka yesterday. It is reported that the TJnion Company's steamer Maitai has undergone an extensive mi thorough renovation at Port Chalmors-so thor oush, in fact, that she is almost a new In a short time she will re-enter the intercolonial sorvice. . v u ' uu »-« On board the Union Company's'steamer Wai.runa, which loft Newcastle last Tuesday for Wn linston. is a considerable quantity of timber and coal.
