ANNIVERSARY DAY.
EVENTS AND RESORTS. CITY AND SUBURBAN ATTRACTIONS; Anniversary Day in tie 'Wellington, district was not favoured by, the best of weather, and towards evening the strong wind, which had prevailed throughout the day, .became almost, a gale and light rain.followed; The uninviting outlook. must, have prevented many from leaving their homes,.but, nevertheless, the various resorts in and about the city were fairly well patronised. Compared with other holidays, the'car traffic was not quite so heavy. The chief traffio was to and from the railway stations. Seatoun and Island Bay sections had very, little' patronage, but over .1000 persons journeyed to Miramar. Of .course the principal centre of attraction outside the city was the races at Trentham, and the Railway Department advise that 6000 tickets were issued to" the course, as against 6500 last year. Over 3000 people journeyed to suburban stations, and 400' went further on.' On the Mana'watu line 500 travelled to places beyond Paekakariki and 1500 visited intermediate -stations. The through train last.night comprised nineteen vehicles'and carried .700 passengers for all stations. .The only delay, experienced was in connection with the depar-, ture of the 4.ls"p;in. train from Thorndon Station. This was due to the fact that one of the engines became disabled, but the train got away only twenty minutes behind ■ time. . Cymkhanaat Petone. i; Anniversary. Day-passed off Very quietly yesterday.' The. gymkhana' at. the Petone recreation grouncT was well attended, a good number went to : .the. ! ,Hefetaunga BoatingClub's excursion,'..and: quite ■>; 'number of' picnic parties were out'.at,the: various . spots, of. the: Hutt; Valley. i-Many of ;;the events in the gymkhana' organised by ibe Church of England Men's Society were of. a novel character,- and .provided abundance of-, amusement for the spectator's. . The efforts, of a band 'of lady workers contributed materially, to the success of the: gathering.- A concept was held'in the Victoria' Street Hall, in'the evening.
