Australian fllea to hand contain accounts-of the accident whioh befell tho Maoriland Steamship Companyle Ennerdale, while, en route from Greymouth to Melbourne. The mishap occurred at half-paat nine in the evening, the weather at the tune being fine and clear and the sea smooth. Suddenly the vessel struck some hidden obstruction with such, violent impact that she shook.from, stem to stern. - It was perceived she was leaking, but'the exact damage could not be located. Nothing remained, accordingly, but to mako .port as best she could, the pumps being- |. trusted to cope.with the inflow. Captain Ooi states-that the obstruction was encountered in Bass Strait, in'a locality which, according to the charts, is quite free from rocks. He is consequently at a loss to account for the nature of the obstruction. Later information by cable states that the.Ennerdale's plates were buckled .and; brokon; for thirty feet,, and there' was a hole large enough for a, wheelbarrow to , pass through. .:..,.' . , ..--. ■ .....-.•. -. .;
