CUP DAY AT TRENTHAM.
A BRILLIANT ,SCENEON;THE LAWN. ; Cup Day this year has' been as notable for the. number of, pretty-.frocks .displayed, on the lawn at Trenlham as for the number of entries received .for the. races. It- was a delightful.day, and though\it-'.seems: to'-have been windy in towu, out at the course there was: more- than; a,"comfortable, breeze; whilo the siin shone in. a pleasant, friendly fashion,': and the background,"of, hills, v refreshed by; the recent rains,■> made the .scene' very boautifuL , Everywhere xrowds,of people moved about in kaleidoscopic fashion, a-very large'proportion of them-gaily "dressed wo-' men, a very small proportion' children, absorbed in their own.small sports. A band, was'., stationed in .the middlo,of,the," lawn, -and all the afternoon played'rather .'dismal music. Some said'that in the,-morning, the music was cheerful, but between morning and afternoon at the.races there are,not wanting opportunities to change from joy to sorrows To an outsider the" thing best'.:worth .seeing is the little parade of the proud horses'before each race,' but" this does; riot .seem to attract many women. \ instead," they walk about and amuse themselves a good: way from *l'e ■ Paddock, or study the : totalisator exhibits while a line of eager men watch:the horses ; play past, shining' in ,the sunshine', and .only slightly disfigured: by the garish 1 costumes-of their snialbriders-. '- ; If the outsider knows nothing about "the horses, it is' best to say nothing, Boanerges wont caper, jng"along.thinking the', world of himself, .and .letting the world see it—also, -rather-in:a temper. ,' Boanerges, son of .Thunder," murmured one. whose information was more Bib-' - i Ileal, than.'.up-to-date, and a scornful' snort from next, door.drew: attention to i theiiaptrtnat this, was a contradiction; of the Jlacing. talendar. • There were.a great-many .very-pretty frocks to be. seen. - One: grew - tired ;of;trying. to select any of them as the .most .beautiful for ' (from the dressmaker's point-.of. view) ..this;.was a .real -field day. ■It i:was;a,day for the daintiest of muslins .and silks,..and many : were the; lovely lace-, frocks' ;to.be seen.. -Blues of all shades' were very popular,;,especially, pale ;'-was -vrorn ;more..than ,auy,.;other- colour..-There , were comparatively-fev.browns,"and.here and there.'brio saw the .new shades mole or elephant"grey,;' This last is ~'a most hideous' ter.m, not to be appropriately applied to any' fabric::worn,.by,: a.fair woman, and,, though truth - compels the assertion that, even elephant hats, were',; worn',;,iheir 'appearance did ript.in ;the least' justify, the 'term.'
