Last Saturday, although not suited for rowing, was perfect for tlie yachts, which wont out in full force for Day's Bay. On arrival there they, cruised round for soma, time and then set out for Oriental Bay behind the ferry boats'. _ Tho yawl rig is coming into great favour with local yachtsmen. Some of the principal yawls are Waitangi, Ngaira, Syren, Kotiri, Viking, Wairere, and a- number of other smaller boats. :■' ;
Tho only club to hold o racing event last Saturday was the Thorndon: -Dinghy Club, which got off a race for tho Oaths' s Challenge Cup, which cup was .carried off Mr. L. Sargeant's Oeo with Ajax second. ' This boat had her'old owner at the lielm, and made a very good showing. Zel and Thelma finished close afterwards in.the. order named.. The Siren arrived home from the Sounds'on Friday night, and tlie Kotiri on Saturday afternoon. .
1 Sunday turned out dull in the morning, but brightened up .as the .day wore on, with a great south-east breeze blowing. Most of , the yachts went out undeir■ full" sail and one reef, and yachtsmen Vere very much surprised to see the lorangi beating up to Seatoun with heir small trysail reefed. This, it is stated, is the first tinle the lorangi trysail has been reefed in six years. The Janet and Wairere were out trying conclusions on the way to Seatoun. !Fhey hung together crossing Evans Bay, but on rounding Point Halswell the Wairere stood closer in shore, got . the weather berth of the two for a few minutes, and then away frohi tho Janet. On clearing /Mahanga Point, howover, tho Janet otit-pointed the Wairere, and arrived at Seatoun first, She anchored at Seatoun and reefed, and then went for a plug'up the entrance, coming back to Seatoun for the remainder of the daj'.' The ■ lorangi, 'Wairere, and Nancy Stair Were als6 at Seatotin. Jackson's launch Taniwha Was anchored tinder the 100 of the wharf atißipple Bay fishing. The May, Karaka, and Nanoya.were at.'Day's Bay .for the.day, arid-tho crfiws of Taipare and Patronus' were at their usual pastime—fishing in KaU Bay. Towards evening' the- .wind. fell, and all. tno boats came homo under full sail. The breezo in Oriental Bay resembled tho breezes one gets in the Sounds. There \vere white squalls, from all points of the compass, and then a great fl&t calm.. . .. .
