THE LORD SEFTON. / An Auckland exchange says the s.s. Lord Sefton, of the Australian mail lis.*, arrived unexpectedly in the Auckland Harbour from San Francisco at 5 o'clqck on Wednesday after-noon,-threa days early.' The Lord Sefton left ..San Francisco on December 18, - and arrived at Apia, in the Samoan Group; on January 4, leaving there again on January 6 for Auckland. She experienced favourable', weather throughout, which partly accounts for, her fast passage, tho steamer averaging 11 knots-all the way. .-She brought about 1000 tons of cargo and 300 bags of mails for Auckland. - . . , . v
*' STAE OF AUSTRALIA DELAYED. For the past two years the boats trading from New York to Australian and New Zealand ports under the auspices of the Tyser Lino have arrived in-this'port on time-taljle'date. ; Tho local agents advise that the Tyser steadier Star of Australia, from New York, via ports, will be unable to reach this port on her due dateJanuary consequence of being delayed at Auckland. She has on board'a considerable quantity of kerosene, and at the northern port is only discharging her cargo at the rate of 6000' cases a .day. The fastest time'recorded; that boats discharging similar, cargoes at Wellington have achieved, is 13,000 cases per day, while; on an' ordinary day 8000 to 10,000 cases are discharged. It is expected that the vessel will arrive here about next Thursday or Friday, and on completing disoliarge of her Wellington cargo leaves for Lyttelton and Dunedin. . EXPORTS BY THE OPAWA. Huddart, Parker Company's steamer Wimmera, from Sydney, via northern ports, passed through Wellington yesterday en route tor Lyttelton and Dunedin. .She>is due back on Thursday from southern ports, and leaves the same day for Sydney, 'via East Coast ports. Yesteray. evening the Scales Line steamer Clan Maoaulay left Wellington for Picton to load wool for London. It is expected that the Clan Sutherland will be in readiness to sail , for London by next Monday. . Now that the construction of a deep-water canal from Chicago to the Mississippi is being carried out, with a . view to ijrovung.a navigable'ohannel down to the Gull of Mexico, the United States Canal Commission,' under the presidency of Mr. Conway, is busy with a plan' for establishing water communication between Chicago and New York (says an exchange). It is intended that, this waterway shall be of sufficient dimensions to. allow of the passage of the largest ocean steamers from Chicago to Defiance (Ohio), from -which point the Miami and Erie Canal will be widened up to Toledo. From Toledo to Buffalo the Lakes will be utilised, and from Buffalo the Erie Canal to New York will be. deepened. The execution of this plan would lessen the distance bv water between Chicago and New York by sio iniles.
