VISIT FROM AN AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN
SOME NEGOTIATIONS.
IBY TEl.EOlUni—rilkS*; ". . Christchuroh, January 14. ■ At-a meeting of the Managing Committee of the Now Zealand Cricket Council, held yesterday, a letter was read from Mr. W. P. Melhone, honorary secretary of the Australian Board of Control for'lnternational Cricket.in which it. was stated that, in reply to the council's letter of October.3o, inviting the Australiatt.team to play a series of matches in New Zealand on. its way ■ to England, the board regrett-ed that the invitation could not be accepted.. The board;would, however, be prepared to arrange .for .the visit to the Dominion of a second eleven of Australia this season, tlio council to pay: all travelling and hotel and ss. per day to the players for personal expenses. The committee decided that, "owing, to the lateness .of the season, the t«am suggested in tho letter from the■• Board of Control- would' fail- to prove financially successful, arid that the Board of Control should be advised to this effect, at the same time stating that such a team Would have been acceptable early, in the season. It was also resolved that the honorary' secretary should be instructed to write to the Board of-.Control inquiring the torm3 upon which the Australian team now about to visit England would, oh its return,. • play a series of matches in New Zealand. It was decided to award the Heathcote Williams shield, presented by Mr. Heathcote Willianls, of Napier, for competition among the _ primary and secondary schools, to the Christchurch Boys' High School. It is now j open for any.school to challenge the holders..!
THE PLUNKET SHIELD,
OTAGO INCLINED TO MAKE TROUBLE,
(UV I'IILBGUiPB—MESS ASSOCIATION.!
-Dunedln, January 14. At a meeting of tho'Otago Cricket' Association to-night to discuss the match between Otago and Auckland, the president (Mr. C. R. Smith) called on Mr.'.T. Ritchie, manager, and Mr. C. G. Wilson, captain, of the Otago team, for a report. Mr. Ritchie stated 'that he had given tho Auckland-Association to understand 'that the Otago team had not come 800 miles to play a drawn game. After the toss ho and the captain interviewed the Auokland v captain, ■ and made it quite clear that th& game was on no account- to be drawn. If Auckland wanted a few wickets to fall towards the finish Otago would not raise objections as to time, and expected similar treatment from Auckland. They both left believing the matter to bo adjusted, but Auckland would not allow the match to be played out, and insisted on drawing stumps' at 6 o'clock. The association evidently did not recognise, the captains in the matter. The president said that he could find noth, ihg in the rules referring to a draw, and concluded that the framers of the r,ules had never contemplated such a thing.'' By not informing the Auckland Association that thev had authorised the captain and manager to act irt the matter. of time they had placed themselves out of court so.far as an appeal was concerned. , ■
Mr. Wilson said that believing that overvthing would go smoothly he had given way in the matter of an afternoon adjournment It was resolved that a report be drawn up by the captain, manager, and president, and that the council be asked.to take such steps as might'be required by way of collecting information. ,:,...
