'" Onsjow Borough Council held its first meet ing of tho-year last night, and .there, were preserit:.- The Mayor -(Mr. J. G: Harkness), Councillors Kiernanj; J. E. Fitzgerald,' Watson, Plimmer, and Lynneberg. ; : <■ : A report. 'was ■ submitted from' Mr. W. H. •Morton, City Engineer; on the. condition of -'the Hutt road. It was estimated.that £200, at least, would bo required to maintain the :road in' good condition 'until the end of the financial year.: Excessive traffic, connected* with ,the . straightening of the railway line had'.causcd the damage to . the road. The suggestion was : made that, .the. Government 'should/contribute to the cost 'of Upkeep, and £200'was ; put forwardYas' a' fairi-amount for the year. ' When the matter was discussed, counciUors pointed out that there was board : specially constituted to:-give' the road •' its attention, and it devolved upon that body to have regard for the present.unsatisfactory condition .of affairs., i ; Council, resolved to hold the matter over until the' application: for a grant for .maintenance;';made'- .by 'the . Hutt Road Control. Board: to. the: Government had been' dealt with. .: ' . . 'The Town Clerk intimated -that £700 l 1;. : lwn received from tho Government for carrying out drainage: works at Kaiwarra'. . There . was a sum of £239 to credit,, and the estimate was" given that £150 -would -be/required to ' . oo'mplete , the work. Originally, the estimate had been, £1100, but a considerable curtailriient had- been effected. - It. was furtheri re-; ported that, some houses would be connected' with ; the drainage system as soon; as the necessary by-laws liad been drawn up. . Holmes tho sum of *£25 'for 12ft.' fronting his', section at JCgaio, to' bo used, as a right-of-way. ' ' .'V i - .
