MINING NEWS.

■i. DEVELOPMENTS IN TALISMAN. . (Dr TELEGBAI'H—SfECIiL COItBESr-ONDENT.) .'.'•■ .. Auckland, January 12. ■ The new Cameron pumps, purchased by the Talisman Consolidated Gold-mining Company, Limited, for the purpose of unwatering. the mine to No. ,13 level, and subsequently lifting the water to enable the property' to bo exploited at a greater depth, arrived,at Karangahake last week, and are being installed.at So. .12. level.; . The. pumps will be in position in a day or two, and' as the plant will enable the company'tol'lift fr0m.50,000 to 60,000 gallons of water per hour, the work of unwatering. to ; . No.' 13, level should be expcditiously carried out/. . . ■

In a recent statement-furnished to.the press, the Wellington Advisory Committee intimated tha rriipirig operaions should be resumed at No. 13; level-within four months from ■ the .time the pumps commenced work, but with tho plant available it is probable that the level will be clear of water well inside the period mentioned. Meanwhile, the management experience no difficulty in :maintaining, good -average .returns from the'ore, at- or. above- No. 12 --level, ; -and the reserves still in sight.clearly indicate that the-monthly gold output can easily, be r kept up.well beyond the time when the No. J3 level will bo ready, for .resumption of mining: operations. In fact, it may be said'that the development works at No. .12 level have shown that the chutes' of pay 'dirt- have in certain-sec-tions extended greater distances than was believed to , bo the case, and that, on the whole, very-satisfactory, values have , been met with. Recently, it was rumoured that. underhand stoping , was in progress at No. 12 level in order to maintain . the output, but this.'statement, "was without foundation. Underhand stoping lias not at-any time.been carried out,' and would bp Sracticapy impossible at. No. 12 level. ' The rive south -at- this .level is now about under the point where-the Bubbo.chuto of ore was ■in evidence at No.ll and No;-10.-levels. At No. 10 level tho reef - was comparatively small running from 2ft. to" 3ft in width., but. carried good -grado ore, while at Nbi- Hit was much wider, -but the-dirt proved to :be. low grade. ..This falling away. in values is' opposed to., the characteristics •of the Talisman'Voiles-generally, the tendency 'usually,'being for- the .quartz bodies to improve going down; and the opening up: oi the Dubbo' ch-ute at No; 12 level will, therefore,'be awaited 'iv;ith interest. The imp9rtancp of the prpspectihg work in this direction should be disclosed iii the course of-a-few weeks.',,. ■.;: : ~-..' : '
