A fiye-rcomed dwelling-house at Wajwetu, owned and occupied by Mr. J. Hunter, was totally destroyed by fire between 1.30 and 2 a.m. yesterday. Mr. Hunter and tiro young men went to bed at eleven o'clock ■ leaving a small fire burning in the grate, considering it perfectly safe. Mr. Hunter was ~, awakened by dense smoke, and had just 'time to put on a few clothes and arouse his companions, one of whom had a narrow escape. Practically nothing was sared. The Lower Hntt Fire Brigade arrived, but the fire bad too firm a hold, and they could do nothing, Tho house was not insured, tat the furniture was insured for £180 in the - Now Zealand office, ilr. Hunter estimates his loss considerably above this amount. A ; valuable dog was under the house, tnd it was canght in sonio wire netting and bnrat to, death. . . , HERETAUNGA BOATING CLUB.
