YACHTSMEN-IN PERIL.
SERIOUS CHARGES AGAINST RACING I s CREV?S. CBT IELEOBAPH—SPECIAIi COERESPONDENT.I Chriatohurch, January 10. Tho\ heavy southerly that sprang up on Thursday afternoon played havoc wtn_ the mosquito yachts that were competing in a raco on tlio estuary on'the occasion of the annual gala at Sumner .Several wore capsized or driven ashoro. " Much comment was caused by the fact that while the crow of an overturned yacht wore in a parlous state in 'the estuary, several motor .bouts, which were engaged in a race at tho time, despite desperate signalling, effected not to notice tho yachtsmen s plight, but continued on their way. It is understood that an'inquiry will Ibe .held by the Christehurch Sailing- and Motor Uoa? Club into tho matter. It is stated that the crdw of one motor boat, which bad retired from the race, on bein" informed of tho yachtsmen s plight, andTming urged to go to their assistance, __ announced their intention of doing so, but, instead, did not even try to make an attempt. Had it .not been for two of the, crew of tho yacht Wharenui, assisted oy two men in a dinghy, there is every probability that a drowning tragedy would have marred the day's proceedings,
