The Salvation Army is accustomed' to play many parts; at Tauranga it conducts a successful fish-preserving industry. It appeared to (Jommissioner M'Kie that if such an industry could; be established ,at Taiiranga it would •find ihealthy employment ;' for tho Maoris, and .the profits might bo mado in support of the Army's religious work among the/Natives.; Accordingly, £900 .was spent on the-■ ( orcotion • of largo .fish ' works, including..; a freezer, smoko houses, and other equipment, and the' Army ■ became purchasers of fish from both . Maoris and Europeans in the district./ The fish, is taken to the works, and cleaned, /and:' if ho -boat, is leaving tho same day for a market, it ;is smoked or frozen, and shipped at the first opportunity to Auckland and 'other centres. . Though the venture ,was : riot/started till late in. the fishing season, close on £1200 was paid, last year for fish, and. a gratifying balance was shown for the assistance of the Maori mission' work. 'Lieutenant-Colonel Knight, who has just returned'from visiting Tauranga, rogards the future of 'this work,, and of the fishing industry, as very promising. Staff-Captain Moore and Adjutant Armstrong, who have charge of the fish-works, ■ are both Maori linguists, and all their spare time is devoted to the spiritual needs/ of the Maoris. On the island of: Rangiwaea the Army has; a pleasant little hall; which seats .ISO people, and this, the Colonel said; was filledtwice last Sunday, when ho gave addresses to tho.Maoris, which wero interpreted by StaffCaptain- Mooro. v
