On Wodnosday night; two men broke into a house in Brougham Street, offering an I entrance through the bath-room. At the time, there was in the house a quantity of :jowellery> arid wedding presents, of which the burglars: presumably had " knowledge. One of tho inmates of the house, having, his: attention, drawn by a' slight but suspicious noise, switohed on an electric lights upon which the would-be robbers decamped at .once.. The police are inquiring into tne matter.. ' •' ; V : '■ ' ' A number of new constables have now been taken from tho training .depot at Mount, Gook for night duty in: tfo city. , Last night ! five policemen were patrolling between the Albert Hotel and Kent Torrace Presbyterian Church The detectives ■ are also doing special night.work. It is'understood that some of the ruffians who were concerned, have left Wellington, but there are apparently still sufficient, leftto make it advisable for tho police to take special precautions,. : ,
