[Br Glencob.l REMINDERS. Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for the handicap events a.t the Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club's annual meeting close this evening with tho club s secretary, Mr. J. W. Emmerson, Waverley. Tclograms should be placed on the wire early in tho afternoon. \ Nominations for all ovents • at the spring mooting of tho Marlborough Racing Club close this evening at the .secretary's office, Blenheim. Entries for the Wanganui Guineas, 1909, and tho Jackson Stakes, 1910, close on Monday with, the' secretary of the Wanganui Jockey Club. Owner's should noto that the stakes attached to both of these events have been considerably increased.
ASHHURST-POHANCINA RACING CLUB'S
ANNUAL MEETING. There can be no mistake that owners have bad all-the best of the deaj with the Ash-hurst-Pohangina Racing Club during the last couple of years, as the stakes distributed at the annual race meeting are a good deal larger than' the club is compelled to give. For its next meeting, to be held on Tuesday, December 29, an excellent programme is' provided. ' ! Altogether the sum of £1400 is to be distributed in prize money, and of this £900 is allotted for the three open races. The principal' event at the meeting is the Ashhurst Cup, of 500 sovs., one mile and a quarter. Just what an excellent race this is will bo understood from the fact that it only costs an owner £5 to start a horse. Other open events at tho meeting are the Pohangina Handicap, of 200 sovs., • six furlongs, and tho Manawatu Gorge Handicap, of 200 sovs., seven furlongs. The hack races each carry 100 sovs. in prize money. They consist of the Trial Hurdles, one mile and a half; Ashhurst Guineas, one mile; Flying Hack, five' furlongs; Komako Welter, seven furlongs; and tho Maiden Hack, four and a half furlongs. In connection with tho hack events it might be mentioned that the club has reduced the acceptance fee in each case to .l sov., thus placing these, races in,a line with tlie hack events on the of the bigger clubs. This is' a consideration that owners should_ appreciate. Special attention has been given to the club's racecourse during the past couple of months, and it should be in excellent condition for the meeting. Nominations for the' seven handicap races at tho meeting, final payments for this year's Guineas,- and second payments for the Guineas of 1909 close on Saturday,December 5j with the secretary, Mr. A. W. Trass. ■ •
MASTERTON SPRINC MEETING. SANDSTREAM WINS' THE PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. . ' ST. BRANDON A I 'SURPRISE PACKET. IBY TELEGEAPH.—SI'F.CIAI, CORRESPONDENT.) Masterton, October 80.'' 111-fortune attended the Masterton Racing Club for the concluding day of the spring meeting. The morning broke fine and clear, but towards nine o'clock rain commonced to fall, and .a- steady downpour continued till after the first >raco. The public attendance was thus spoiled, and naturally the club's totalisator revenue was seriously affected; also a two-horse race, in which the rtotalisator. did. no business whatever, intensified the financial slump.: The total investments', for. the day amounted to only. £4138; the , grand total for the meeting reading £9204,' as. compared with. £15,353 last • year—a difference of £6149. Seven bookmakers wore on the ground-rsix inside and one outside.' i Although the fields were small in some of-ithe races,' some' good finishes ! were witnessed,and some fair times were I "recorded, too,' as the rain had not seriously affected'the track. The' _ the meeting was: tho win of St. Brandon in the Welter Hack Handicap; in which- event' he was the most successful outsider which has ever' raced at r a Masterton meeting. - The pacing, was attended by two mishaps.. Price, rider of King Post iii i tho sec.ond race, , had, a. narrow escape through his saddle, slipping' just, as he .was finishing. , The jockey was. thrown on,',to his horse's neck, ■ but regained his seat splendidly., Golden Butterfly fell going, over tho hurdles in the first race, throwing M'Gregor heavily.. . Although severely, shaken, the jockey was not otherwise injured. The management of, the meeting left little, to bo desired.. All the officials, worked very well, and the events were started up to time. The club an excellent luncheon, a feature which is'disregarded at some race gatherings through negligent catering. • ■ ; . Half a mile from homo tho field bunched, but entering tho straight Sandstream and Skyo singled themselves out, and the San Fran gelding, finishing resolutely, won comfortably by a clear length. The field moved off in straggling fashion, Windage and Colossus being. badly left. Brandon got all the best of the start, and was never headed, winning by three lengths from Tangeroa, who was clear of Kelso. Highden was close up fourth, Routine fifth, a,nd Colossus last." Time, lmin. 48 2-ssec. •
, STEWARDS' HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. 1 Mr. A. Rhodes's b. m.' Golden Eagle, by "St. Clements—Rau Rau, syrs, 7st. 1 ' 101b. (H. Price) 1 Mr.,o. E. Austin's Toa Tuhi, Bst. 51b.

Simplex was first away from Lothair, Full Rate, and. Toa Tuhi, with Golden Eagle, last. Simplex led to the straight from Lothair and Full Rate, while Golden Eagle had run into fourth place. Simplex ran wide at the bend, and Full Rate got up on the rails, but nothing could finish with Golden Eagle, who won easily by three' lengths, Toa Tuhi beating Full Rate by half a length for second place. Lothair was fourth'. . Time, lmin. 16 3-ssec. ELECTRIC HACK'HANDICAP, .of 50 sovs. Six furlongs.Mr. S. Russell's br. f. Vi, by Merriwee—. Armada, 3yrs, 7st.'slb. (E. Lowe) ... 1 Mr. W. Timothy took the lead at the end of a furlong, and led to the distance, where Vi came with a wet sail and won easily by two lengths from Sir Antrim, who was a neck in front of Timothy. Hermia was close up, fourth. • Time, lmin. 18sec. ' ; NOTES ON THE RACING. Speciosa was again made'favourite for'the Hack Hurdles, but the St. Hippo mare ran off at the first hurdle and Indian Mutiny followed suit. Yosami, who won very easily on the 'first day, .took the lead from- the first hurdle, and ; jumped splendidly throughout the journey. After landing over, the last hurdle/Joe Ward threw out a hot challenge, but Cairns shook Yosami up, and she came right away again, winning easily. Golden Butterfly, who was expected' to run well, crashed through, the second hurdle', throwing and severely shaking M'Gregor, her'jockoy. Seven starters contested the Tradesmen's Hack Handicap, which resulted in a splendid • finish between the three placed horses. King Post would probably ' have won,- but when about three" chains from the winniug' post tlie Horse swerved, and the saddle slipped from underneath Price. He rode ' a good finish till without about ten yards, of .the post, when he was shot on ,to the horse.'s neck, and Mildura just caught him in the last few strides. Price maintained his seat, but got a rough shaking. His horsemanship • came in for very favourable comment, and he was rather unlucky to be beaten in the last few yards. .Mildura was again slow to commence, but came very , strong at the finish. Osiris did not appear to be suited by. the going. , •
All the. acceptors faced the starter in the President's Handicap, for which Irish Rifle was made favourite. At. the finish, however, the race resulted in a very easy victory for Sandstream,' who has been doing excellent track work during the past couple of weeks. Ho was troublesome at the barrier to-da.v, and was tho last to move, off when the tapes went up. Making up his ground nicely, ho took charge at the distance post, and made "a' hollow: show of the opposition. Irish Rifle, who,. was .on .the rails at the start,' got shut in before they had gone far, and could not ,• get near-the leaders until right into the straight, when it was.too close for him to get.nearer than ■fourth. .. San-:Fernando . led: in tfye .early stages, but died away at the finish to* nearly last. Silken Rein appeared to be pocketed-at the home turn, and may have been unlucky in not getting second. Gaelic, who finished fifth, does not appear to be quite ready yet for a severe' ordeal.
A'very tame race was the High-weight Hack Handicap, which Netherby won from Tainui, who was allowed to lead until dangerously near'tho ' winning post. As there were only the two starters in this race no investments were made on the totalisator, but the bookmakers did a small amount pf business.
Ballance, ridden by Mr. G. Hirst, : was made favourite for the' Hunters' Hurdles, and Whakatika was the next best backed. This was really the best bet of the meeting, for Ballanco just played with the field until two hurdles from home,, and then tool? charge, and won with ridiculous ease. AVhakatika' ran well for. a mile, but finished out of a place. ' Tiana ran very badly, and was beaten .over the last three furlongs by the assistant starter.' .The set-to between the pair amused the crowd very considerably.
Tangeroa was made a very hot favourite for the Welter Hack, and with a good start he would most likely have won. St. Brandon/however, got an advantage at the start which gave him the race.. A couple of candidates were troublesome at the! barrier, and when the tapes were released they-all moved olf in straggling fashion, St. -Brandon getting the best of it. He was practically neglected in the betting, and was one of the biggest outsiders that has ever won at Opaki.
Full Rate, who had not been raced since the Trentham autumn meeting, was produced for the Stewards' Handicap, and went out second favourite. He was certainly well handicapped, but docs not ■ appear to be thoroughly wound up yet, and may require a race or two to sharpen him 'up. Though he' finished third in to-day's race there was practically no merit in the performance for ho had a'clear run on the-rails at the homo bend, and Golden Eagle, who won, got' all the worst of the start. Golden Eagle's suo,-j cess meant another blow to backers, as.the. St. Clements mare was very little fancied'. H. Trice, who rode her, was also successfjil on Mildura earlier in the afternoon. ®i;il recently Price Was first horseman. fo'MP.' Quinlivan's stablo, but his connection Willi? that establishment terminated at the conolu'i si'on of the Trentham meeting. ■ ..
There were eleven starters for the Electric Hack, which proved a good betting race, Sir Antrim, The Cockatoo, Vi, and Hermia all being well backed, and the first-named closed up as favourite. A good deal of delay took place at tho barrier, several of the horses breaking through the tapos before the final start. Sir Antrim got away badly when tho tapes were released, and though ho ran gamely ho could only get second behind Vi. The latter had a .nice position from tho. start, and won with a lot in hand. Tho Cockatoo got away well, but was slojv. to. ■find her' feet, and ouicklv l ist her position. Titnothy looked all'civer a winner at tivo furlough but began to tiro quickly after that;
. Winning jockeys at the meeting wore: F. Cress three, E. Lowe three, H. Cairns two, H. Price two, R. Hatch two, and 1\ O'Brien one. The successful gentlemen ridors were Messrs. G. Hirst, D. Buick, and J. Haxton. i The principal winning owners at the meeting were: Mrs. M. Moore, £200; Mr. W. Davies, £120; Mr. G. H. Miller, £120; Mr. W. J. Douglas, £95; Mr. A. Rhodes, £85; Mr. D. H. Roberts, £85; Mr. P. G. Quirk, £60; Mr. A. M'Donald, £50; Mr. ,W. C. Vincent, £50; and Mr. J.,Savage, £50.
: San. Francisco (St. Simon —Isabel) . was the principal winning sire at the meeting, the stake won by Sir Frisco being worth £200. Other winning ■ sires were Merriwee (Bill of .Portland—Etraweenie), £160; The Officer (Robinson Crusoe — Mario Louise), £140; Son-of-a-Gun, £125; San Fran..
