A CALL TO CANADA. , • (BT TELEGRAM— rHESS ASSOCIATION—COrTRIGEIT.) (Rec. October 30, 9.40 p.m.) ■ London, October 30. The Bishop of Stepney, Dr. Cosmo Lang, has been elected Bishop of Montreal. The Bishop of Stepney is a son of tho Very Roy. John Marshall . Lang, D.D., who was Moderator 'of the Church of Scotland in • 1893. He was educated at Glasgow University and at Balliol College, Oxford, of which ho was elected scholar in 1882. He took a.Second.Class' in Lit. Hum. in 1885, and the following year he graduated witn a First Class in -Modern History. • Ho was also president of the Union Society. He became a Fellow of All Souls' in 1838, and. was re-elected in 1897. For some time be was a lecturer in connection with the University Extension, movement, and was for some months a student at Cutldosdon. He was ordained in 1890, by tho Bishop' of Oxford, and was curate of Leeds, under the 'present , Bishop of ■> Rochester, 1890-3. In the latter year he returned to' Oxford as Fellow and Dean of Divinity of Magdalen College, where he showed considerable power of influencing undergraduates, and to this work, in 189-1, he added tho incumbency of St. Mary's. On the promotion, of I Dr. Jacob to .the' Bishopric of : Nowcastlo,, in .1896, Mr. Lang was appointed by'the .Crown, on the recommendation ofyMr. Balfour; to the vicarage 'of,' St. Mary's, Portsea,' the parish whioh came under the notico of tho late Mr. W. H., Smith, when First Lord of the Admiralty, -and to which ho was a munificent, and, for a long time, anonymous benefactor. In this parish there is a population of nearly 40,000, the vicar is a patron of five, livings, and has at the present moment no fewer than sixteen assistant-curates. ; Dr. Lang is an able preacher, and his teaching powors are obvious in a book on the miracles, published a few years ago. It was mentioned in The Dominion, recently that' Dr. Lang has consented to pay a visit to Australia and New Zealand on a "mission to men." ■. • ■
