HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(FItOM OUR-SPECIAL HEPOIITEn.) .. . 9 LOWER HUTT DRAINAGE. ' PROGRESS OF THE SEPTIC TANKS. The Lower Hutt waterworks and other largo works having been completed, the conBtniction of the septic tanks is" now being pushed ahead. The tank in Wakefield Road, Into White's Lino, on the western side of tho river, is well in hand. A Dominion representative paid a visit to the spot yesterday morning, and fort'nd-that most-of the false work in preparation- for tho concreting and a considerable amount of the concrete work ha.d been done! The steel pipo leading. to the outfall,'.soma hundreds of .feet, is al; ready laid. Naturally, there was a certain amount of water, to contend with in putting m this tank, hut-this seems to be well'overcome by the uso of a pumping plant which lias been installed-. From present indications there seems to be 110 difficulty in bringing the work to the successful issue .anticipated. TIIO tank is of reinforced concrete, and is being constructed on the same lines as the reservoir, which has turned out such a. success. A splendid bottom of ballast haa been found, thus giving a very satisfactoryfoundation. The construction of the tank is being carricd out by Mr. A.-Comotti, who lias.had charge of most of the reinforced concrete. works under the supervision of tho borough engineer. The tank on tho eastern,, sido will be begun in the course of a few weeks, the hydraulic pumping plant has been ordered, and the contract for the pipes has'.already been let, \\ ith the. advent of the pipes, the drainage proper will be put in hand, at once, and as it will start from the'tanks, it is hoped .before long that the 'houses in Alicetow'n and the proximity will be connected up. It will not be nccessary to wait for the whole of tile drainage to be completed before the tanks -, can be brought into use; for, as each section is completed, •it will bo connected, with .the tanks. The Wakefield Road tank . will-; be or very modern ■ construction, divided into ■ various compartments so that .the. proper bacteriological action will take place. l The sewage will be hermetically sealed, and there ' 1,1 be 110 odour nor ,will the residents in vicimty be . inconvenienced in any way. With ,the completion of-the drainage. • it is considered that Lower Hutt -will take-, a lot of beating as'a residential suburb. One ; of .the finest water-supplies in tho country," up-to-date drainage, good roads, and;'good footpaths are alrea.dy. there. ■ • . MELLING SUSPENSION BRIOCE. . The Moiling Suspension. Bridge will'be put in hand immediately. With its completion, - residents will have access to. the fine, walls along tho western side, besides having the advantages of the; train stopping there. The' bridge approaches should be completed ia sis .weeks' time at latest. HUTT NO-LICENSE LEACUE. The Hutt No-Licenso League paid a visit' ' to Taita- 011 Wednesday evening, when a ' meeting was held jn Cotter's Hall. There • was a fair attendance, and recitations were ■ given, by tho R-ev. M'Ewan)-told a reporter, who made an inquiry on the subject, that, in his opinion, the,park.should..bo .used -in .the same > way '.'that' Hagley Park, at-^Christ-church, is used by the Domain-Board in, charge. It-ia. • probable that, failing any-alteration in the : ' law.governing .thoi.cqutrol .of the park,' the oommittee may., adopt by-laws.. somewhat similar to. those'enforced at Hagley-Park, that is, lotting cricket clubs, etc., have ;the use of the ground at a rental. ......- ... JOTTINGS. The Rev. J. D. 'Russell, of IPetoae,'. returned last night from a trip to (Jisborne.
