' CUP WON BY SIR, FRISCO. JOCKEYS CAUTIONED. (Bt MtIOBAPH.—SriCIAt COKBESroKOXNT.) Mastorton, October 29. Excellent weather favoured the opening day of' the, Masterton Racing Club's spring meeting,. and considering the counter attraction of'the show at,Carterton, the attendance was more than satisfactory. Notwithstanding the large crowd present, however, speculation was dull, and the totalisat6r investments' only amounted to £5069 for the day.' The license fees received from fifteen bookmakers would make up for the loss in this respect. Large fields were' the order throughout the day, 'and first-class racing resulted. Sir Frisco won ; the Masterton Cup, after, a really , fine race. . Some boring took plaoe in this event, and the stewards afterwards cautioned S. Reid, rider of Irish Rifle, for not,' keeping a straight course in the finish. Later on the stewards had occasion to caution Lambess, the rider of Toa Tuhi, for not riding his mount, right out in the Publicans' Handicap; The following are the detailed results:— HACK ■ HURDLE. (Lowe). ■ Axito and Hermia were first away, and'led to tho distance, where Axite retired, and Hermia was challenged by The Cockatoo on tho rails and Tumut- on the outside, lhe •latter finished best, and won by a good half length; with The Cockatoo three parts of a length away third, and Sir Antrim close up fourth: Time, lmin.' 2 2-ssec. ■ . NOTES ON THE RACING. : Master Douglas and Liberator were withdrawn from the Hack Hurdles,. for _which: Speciosa was- installed favourite. - Hatley shaped fairly well, but he never had a chance with Yosami. Cairns on tho latter took the lead as soon as/the field-settled down, and was always going comfortably. The Officer mare jumped more proficiently, and-has apparently got over the nervousness which characterised her previous efforts. The idea that she' gallops best in front of the field was amply ~bornp( , : out_ i; jn this race. Speciosa was going-well-over the first three furlongs, but she bit the hurdle.in front of the stand very hard; and did not gallop so. well afterwards. .Lebeccio fell at half, the journey while running.second to Yosami. .
1 The'withdrawal of Osiris from the Flying Hack left five starters to contest the event. Mildura. who' had the, services- of Hatch, was well backed, but began badly and never got within touch of' the leaders till too late. Fulminator showed pace for half,a mile, but died away in the straight. Tho finish between Passive and Investment was an exciting one, but the former got a small break at the home turn which she was able to maintain'to the finish.' *
• Gaelic, Polyanthus, and ' San - Fernando were scratched for the Masterton Cup, leaving twelve startors. • A nice start was effected in'front of the stand, though Silken Rein and Roseai were chopped out as soon as the .field, moved off. Sir Frisco, who was installed a slightly better than Silken Rein, did not gel a nico position at the start, but Hatch rode a-beautiful race oil him, and half' a milo from home was within'a couple of lengths of the. leaders. Half-way up the straight Irish Rifle crossed right on-to Sir Frisco, but the latter avoided tho bump, and finishing well won by a good margin. ■ S.. Reid, rider. of Irish Rifle, was subsequently called before the "stewards for crossing in the straight and, severely cautioned.' 'When Irish Rifle crossed, Blue Ribbon, -who' was making a good'run, was interfered' with, and finished just out of a place, On to-day's running it 'looks ,as if a mile and a quarter is beyond' Irish Rifle, but at'a mile he could probably have won. Loiret, who won the Pahiatua ' and Woodvillo Cups last season, appears to be coming back to form,, as she ran much' better than 'she has done previously this' season..
. The large field'of fifteen went to the post for-the'Maiden Scurry,'for which Kiltie Lass was a better favourite than Rock Ferry., Two or three of the candidates broke through the tapes before the start, .and Kiltie. Lass refused to go to the barrier until led up by the/assistant -starter. . The field was eventually dispatched -in a good , line, and the shapely little Kilcheran, filly began very smartly and soon led by several lengths. She was kept going wifch the whip in the straight,but the second horse never got within half a dozen lengths of her. Kiltie Lass is the first of Kilcheran's progeny to win. The only others that have so far sported silk are Rauparo and Kilindini. The second and third horses in this race were sired by Birkenhead: Hermia shows promise, but Rock Ferry, who had . tho services of Oliver and got, a good start, does not appear to be very much good. Tho nicest-looking colt in . the race, and perhaps, one of the best on the course to-day,.-, was Colossus, by Swordfish from Turituri.' I had a good look at this youngster, and it is. dififcult to fault him.. Ho is scarcely ready for racing yet, but should do very well later on in the. season. Lady 'Paul wa3 submitted to auction after the race, but failed to'find a buyer. ;
The Ladies'. Bracelet, for which eleven horses went to' the' post, was generally regarded. as a good thing for Espartero, but tho Torpedo horse never looked like a winner. Golden Butterfly, who is very well just now, went to the front after going half a' mile, and always had his field well beaten. After that tho connections of tho chestnut horse were very sangunie about his chanccs, and landed a good stake over tho victory.
Sandstream, who had started in the Cup, was the only withdrawal from the Octobor Hack. On tho strength of his good form at Napier Park Highden was mado favourite, but after running, prominently throughout the journey, tho Morriwee golding was decisively beaten by Tangeroa. Maher has Tangeroa pretty well, and it would have taken a good deal of weight to stop him against tho weak field he met to-day. Kelso and Windage ran in'tho lead for seven furlongs, but Mikotabi was always a long'way out of tho hunt.
Full Rate and Daisy Paul being scratched for the Publicans' Handicap Simplex was made favourite. Oliver got an excellent start on the Eton gelding, but it was of no use at tho finish as Simplex stopped to nothing. Polyanthus was troublesome at tho barrier, but being led up by tho assistant starter sho got away on terms with the field, and though sho lost her position through the race she came again at the finislband won convincingly though not before her time. Hatch, on Lothair. tried to steal a march in tho
straight, but The Officer gelding was unable to see the. journey out. The stewards met after the race to consider tho running of Toa Tuhi. After hearing the evidence of the horse's owner they expressed themselves as satisfied that the horse was sent out to win, but cautioned the jockey that in future he must ride "His mounts right out.
The oloyen acceptors all started in the Dash Hack, • Sir •. Antrim being made favourite. Hermia and Lady Paul were making their second appearances during the afternoon. The former went to the front with Axite, and tried to win all the way, but Tumut was too fast at the finish. Sir Antrim finished fourth, but noror appeared to hold a winning chance. Telford has him looking beautifully well now, and if;lie is any good at all he ought to be able to win;, shortly. The Cockatoo, own sister to-Probability, had a rather bad passage in this race, otherwise she might have been second. ✓ ' 'ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY. ■ ; (Br TELEGRirH —rREjS ASSOCIATION.)
