SUPREME COURT. CRIMINAL SITTING. " TWO PRISONERS SENTENCED. At a criminal sitting of the Supremo Court yesterday, presided over by Mr. Justico Cooper, two prisoners camc up for sentence. DESPICABLE THEFTS. William Henry Carlson, alias Harry Carlson, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of theft at Wellington and to another at Hastings, was the hrst prisoner set forward. In reply to tho usual question, he stated that he was a hard working man; that at the time of tho offences he was drunk and in want of money; and that lie would never commit an offence again. His Honour: You obtained £17 or £18 very easily by committing theft from your mate. I don't see why I should extend leniency to you. The prisoner was sentenced to two .years' imprisonment, with hard labour, on the first charge and to one year on the second charge, tho sentences to be concurrent. THEFT AT WOODVILLE. James Mason, alias Good, was then presented for sentence for having stolen jewellery valued at £18 from an hotel at Woodville. After having read a statement put in bj prisoner, his Honour observed: —You ask for leniency, but you have a long record. It is true it is not sufficiently bad to justify me in declaring you an habitual criminal, but it is nearly so. ; Prisoner: This will be the last time I shall come before the Court His Honour: Yes, it will be the last occasion for vome time at least that you will get an opportunity to commit depredations on other people's property. You nave been convicted of theft every year since 1906. Prisoner: I was under the influence of liquor when I committed the thefts. His Honour stated that prisoner would be sentenced to two. years' imprisonment, with hard labour.
