M'Ewan) said that he "expected that a satisfactory settlement of the Eastern Petone drainage scheme—which has-been delayed through tne action of the Public, Works .Department— would probably bo arrived at shortly. PETONE ROWINC CLUB. The Petonp Rowing. Club appears likely to have a successful season. Twenty new members have been elected since the opening day, the total membership now standing at about 80. The clnb has been endeavouring to get the trial fours off, but the presence of southerly winds during the past few days has caused delay.- <An order for a new inaiden racing four has been given, and the boat is to be ready for next season. The club recently decided -to open its membership to'ladies, and ten /have joined, 'five being elected at Monday night's meeting of the committee. A pleasure boat for--the ladies is under order, and another i one is to' bo secured. When this is done;' races will be arranged. NO-LICENSE LEAGUE. The Oddfellows' Hall,' Petone, was crowded on Monday ; when the monthly meeting of the No-License League was held. ■ Mr. A. R,, Atkinson! supported .by Revs. Wilson, -Metsori, Williams, 'and M'Crackett. _ A irst-class programme was given by Miss Kirk, Mr. Chamberlain, Mr. Peak, Miss Millar, Miss M'Ewan, and Mr. Jowett. Mr. Atkinson said that in spite of the fact that temperance reform had caused restrictive legislation and strict administration, the increase in , drunkenness in two years was 40 per cent, in Wellington. A pleasing function took place at Petone last night, at a social. given by the St. " David's Young Men's Bible Class, when the \ presentation of a silver-mounted case of * brushes, suitably inscribed, was made to Mr. John Ross, 8.A., who is going up for his M.A. degree, and in November will go to the Otago Theological Hall,.for a'three years' theological course. In making the presentation, the Revi A. Thomson referred to Mr. Ross's connection with the Bible Class. In a few well-chosen words, Mr. Ross'Teturned his thanks for their kindness.. The contractors have delivered all the grids for the new scrubber to be erected at the Petone Gasworks, and . they will be placed in position immediately. . Brome, superintendent, was in charge, and there were 31 juveniles present and-101 Phoenix Lodge members to assist in the work of the juveniles. After six candidates were initiated, the following • contributed to harmony:—Sis. Seagar Hargraves, Bros: Bailey, Seagar, Winnie, and Sis.'M. Seagar. A prize was awarded to Bro. Burr Hanson for having given most, items during the quarter. The Lower Hutt Wesleyan Church will hold a- bazaar early in January next in aid of the organ fund. .. . The members of the gymnasium in connection with the' Lower Hutt Wesleyan-Church have been holding mo-st promising rehearsals of the gymnasium display which will be given on November 4. The members'are putting-in good work, and an excellent performance should (result. The display is in aid of the funds of the institution, to provide tho l necessary apparatus in the way'of horizontal bar, rings, etc., and to clear off the debt on the piano.
