A good _ deal of tho fruit—particularly tho early fruit and strawberries—come from Auckland, where hitherto it lias been shipped by East Coast steamers leaving there 011 Tuesdays and Saturdays and arriving liore 011 Fridays and Tuesdays. The freight rate for fruit from Auckland to Wellington by steamer has been 12s. Gd. per ton measurement, but tho rato ovor any distance on the Government railways is Is. per cwt., which works out in tho average to about 7s. 3d. per ton measurement. The fruit entrained one day will reach Wellington tho next. The local fruit merchants would liko to know if any special provisions are being made by the Kaihvay Department for the couvoyanoo of strawberries.
