THE KAPITI. Yesterday morning tho Patea trader Kapiti was floated off from Pipitea Point, and placed on the.Slip for'examination and repairs. A plate amidships on the starboard side has been damaged, and it is expected that repairs will be effected by Thursday. THE SURREY. To-morrow tho F.H.S. Line steamer Surrey, from Liverpool, via Auckland and Napier, is expected to leave the latter port for Wellington, and is due here on Thursday afternoon. A. AND A. LINE. To-day the A. and A. Lino steamers Clan Matheson and Kazembe, from New York, via Australia, aro expectcd to leave Auckland for Wellington. They aro both expected to arrive in time to commence discharging on Friday morning. THE NIWARTJ. On Fridav the Ty=er liner Niwaru leaves Wellington for the BlulT. After Homeward loading at Dominion port*, she sails finally for London, probably from Wellington, about the middle of November. H.M.S. ENCOUNTER, i According to the Cliristchurch "Press" H.M.S. Encounter is to leave Lyttelton tomorrow for Nelson and Wellington. It is rumoured that the cruiser may pay ai visit to the Chatham Islands at an early date. SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS. There have been many postponements in the date of arrival at Wellington of tho Canadian liner Indravelli from Vancouver, via ports. The local agents, Messrs. Johnston and Co., advise that h'er delay in the south is in consequence of the failure of the railway authorities to place sufficient rolling stock at her disposal, for the reception of her timber cargo. At Timaru she was considerably delayed, and tho same thing is happening at Lyttelton, where she is now discharging. The Indravelli is expected to reach Wellington within the next few days. LINER AND WHALE. A telegram received in London from New York states that on her last westward passage the White Star liner Teutonic rammed and killed a big whale. The occurrence happened when tho vessel was one day out from Queenstown. The starboard engines were stopped for fear the carcass might become entangled in the blades of the propeller and do damage beyond repair. Captain Harry Smith, commander of the steamship, said ho had never before met a whale that seemed so persistently bent on self-destruction. "We sighted him about half a mile oil our starboard bow," he said, "and as he headed directly across our course I ordered the helm to be starboarded to swing the vessel away from him. The whale appeared to be about 50ft. in length, and only swam the faster when he saw us swing. We struck him squarely, and the starboard bow of the Teutonic was splashed high with blood." THE SYDNEY BOAT. Cabled advice received reports that the Union Company's steamer Waikare left Sydney at 2 p.m. on Saturday for Wellington direct. She has 011 board 49 saloon and 99 steerage passengers booked for Wellington, and should reach hero to-morrow afternoon. THE WARRIMOO. Having completed an extensive overhaul at Port Chalmers, the Union Company's steamer AVarrimoo has resumed running in the intercolonial service. She transhipped the Manuka's cargo at Dunedin, and last night left the Bluff for Hobart and Melbourne. Captain Clift, late of the Koromiko, has taken command of the Warrimoo, and his officers are as follow: — Mr. J. Scott, chief; Mr. J. T. Reid, second; Mr. R. Hall, third; Mr. Sizcr, fourth. Mr. Slimant is chief engineer; Mr. A. C. Eeid is second; and Mr. J. Anderson, third. OSWESTRY GRANGE'S EXPORTS. Exports by the F.H.S. liner Oswestry Grange, which left Wellington on Saturday afternoon, for Avonmouth, via Monte Video, are as follow:—Prom Wellington: 1000 carcasses mutton, 520 cases preserved meats, 15 casks tallow, 380 bales tow, 118 boxes /butter, 409 eases checse, 221 packages machinery, 10 quarters beef, 3 bales leather, 19 bags tin clippings,-127 bales hemp. From Melbourne, transhipped at Wellington: 721 packages harvesters and parts, for Bahia Blanca. THREE SHIPS IN ONE. STARTLING PLANS FOR FUTURE OCEAN. LINERS. A revolution in shipbuilding methods is foreshadowed in a booklet entitled "The Ocean Empress of the Future." The writer, Mr. Jamfes Dickie, states that for years past shipbuilders, have been working on wrong, lines' with antiquated ideas. Despite every improvement in propelling power the old "ship shape" has been steadily adhered to, and every extra knot or two shown by the newest ocean greyhounds has cnlv been obtained at an enormous and unnecessary expenditure. Great speed and perfect safety are to be obtained' in the ship of the futuro in quite, a new way. Instead of one hull, the new ship is to have three long, narrow hulls or runners, pointed at each end, all three being connected by the deck and upper works. No less novel is the method of applying the propelling power. Instead of boing concentrated at the stern of the vessel, it is. distributed throughout its entire length by a series of propellers which project from the sides of the hull into the water channels between. GALLANTRY ON THE CYMRIC. KING'S MEDALS PRESENTED. • • An interesting presentation took place on August 27 at Liverpool Town Hall, when certain officers and seamen of the White Star liner Cymric received awards for the part they had played in effecting the rescue of the forty-one survivors of the steamer St. Cuthbert belonging to Messrs. Rankin, Gilmour, and Co., and abandoned on fire in the North Atlantic on February 3 last. The souvenirs consisted of eight silver medals awarded by the King to the crew who manned the Cymric's lifeboat, a silver cup presented by the Board of Trade to Lieutenant Finch, It.N.R., commander of the liner, a binocular glass to Lieutenant Stivey, R.N.R., chief officer, who was in charge of the lifeboat, and .£3 and a letter signed by the President of the Board of Trado to each sailor who manned the rescuing boat. The Deputy Lord Mayor, who presented the awards, described the rescue as a piece of daring heroism and fine seamanship. Such deeds, he said, made British seamen famous, and Britain the mistress of the seas. Captain Finch some years ago mado two voyages to New Zealand as master of the Shaw, Savill liner Gothic. :

To-day the Union Company's collier Poherua loaves for Greymouth, and the Rosamond is expected to get away for Westport. It is reported that the Union Company paid ,£3OO for the Norwegian barquentinc Polly, which, is to be used as a coal hulk in Auckland. To-day the Blackball Coal Co.'s new steamer Ngaliere is fixed to leave Lyttelton for Greymouth. Captain Christian and officers and crew were to sign on al Lyttelton yesterday. One of the' Australian mail liners—the s.s. Boveric—reached Auckland on Wednesday afternoon from San Francisco. When she has discharged about 100,000 ft. of timber and 800 tons of general cargo, she proceeds to Sydiv to co&plete unloading. Following her is the Tcddo, which is expected to leave San Francisco to-day. It is stated that she is bringing a large cargo. Captain Holmes, R.N.R., retains command of the Shaw-Savill liner Karamea, which arrived at Port Chalmers on Friday morning, from London direct. His officers are:—Chief, Mr. A. Roberts; second, Mr. J. Jimson; third, Mr. T. Jones; fourth, Mr. W. Thomson. Mr. Finlayson is chief engineer, his assistants being Messrs. Nicol, Crawford, and Webb; Mr. Campbell being chief refrigerating' engineer, and Mr. Ridley, second. Dr. Pryor is surgeon, and Mr. Badrich chief steward. An exchange says that in' accordance with Mr. Ferguson's scheme, the Victorian Government has approved the preparation of plans and estimates for a pier 800 ft. long to be erected at Port Melbourne. Detailed plans and estimates of the cost of constructing pier and of its equipment with sheds, railway tracks, and facilities for dealing with goods and passengers, and also of railway connection between it and the Port Melbourne line will be prepared in due couise.
