SHIPPING AND SEAMEN'S ACT.
A DUNEDIN CASE. (BY TELEGRAPH.— SPECIAL' COKI'.ESrONnENT.) ' Buneciin, October 23. Georgo Albert Marks, master of the Southern Steamship Company's steamer Rakiura, was to-day charged that on August 28 last he discharged seamen without informing tho Marino Superintendent, as required by section 55 of the Shipping and Seamen's Act, 190 S. Mr. Ramsay explained that all the crow were not signed off. The mate remained on tho vessel after tho master and the other members of the crew were signed oil'. Tho defendants had been under the impression that so long as tho discharge of the crew was ratified by the Marine Superintendent everything would be right. Ho contended that tho offence, which was admitted, was a very trivial one, and could be met by recording a conviction without inflicting a penalty. The Magistrate: I don't agree with you, Mr. Ramsay, that this is trivial. Ths Sliipping and Seamen's Act must bo very strictly interpreted. Defendants wero oonvicted. and fined 205., with costs £3 10s. ,Tho Southern Steamship Company, being owners of tho steamer Rakiura, v.cro oonvicted of baring failed to transmit to tho Marine Superintendent tho agreement of tho crew, and ordered to pay costs.
