Professor G. W. Heller and Mrs. Maude Heller will commence a brief, season at the Theatre Royal next Saturday night. Their programme includes plenty of'mystification and some remarkable illusions. The box plan is at tho Dresden. A concert was given at the Sailors' Rest last night by Madame Mueller and her pupils, assisted by the Misses Pickett, Baker, Mueller, and Rasch, Mrs. Foley and her juvenile •pupils,' Messrs. Craddock, Riddier, Fougherty, and Hayes, and was greeted by an enthusiastic and crowded audience of sailors. Each item on 'the long . programme was encored. The entertainment was brought to a conclusion at a late hour by a hearty vote of thanks, proposed by the superintendent and carried with acclamation, The various it-ems were acconipanied .by Miss Levestam. The concert for next, Monday night is being arrangod by Miss Fieldhouse. Mr. Maughan Barnett's next recital on the Town Hall organ will be given on Thursday, evening of this week at 8 o'clock. The programme appears in our' advertising columns. . _ An entertainment will be . given to-night in St. Thomas's Schoolroom, Newtown, by St. Mark's Young Men's , Club. Part I - will consist of a musical elocutionary programme, and Part II a farce entitled "The Area Belle." Seats for Mr. J. M. Clark's elocutionary and musical recital in the Town Hall next Thursday night may be reserved at ' the Dresden. : ' In the contract for the erection of municipal abattoirs, let to Messrs. Mace 'and Nicholson for between £7000 and £8000, it is specified that the work shall be; finished ..in seven months' time. The tender was accepted on Friday last. A separate contract will be let for the fitting up, of a bullock hoist, slide rails, and other gear used in tho handling of the carcasses. ;

The exhibition of new and artistic furniture at Messrs. H. Fielder and Co.'s warehouse, Manners Street, is attracting attention, the two large front windows being artistically arranged as bedroom and drawing-room respectively. The firm is manufacturing from a well-seasoned stock of New Zealand woods furniture that is stated to be of excellent quality. The large increase of entries received from breeders and exhibitors outside the Wairarapa in the principal sections of • tho Wairarapa Society Show- will probably attract a large number of people frorii different parts. The shorthorn and dairy cattle classes are exceptionally well represented by both Wairarapa and other breeders, and the stock exhibited, including the Holsteins from New Plymouth and Palmerston, will, it is said, be. the finest exhibition ever seen on the Cartel ton Show Grounds. In the sheep classes the various breeds are especially large in entries, and the display will no doubt bring a very large attendance on Wednesday and Thursday. The Soutlidowns in quality and quantity are said to be the finest ever seen in the Wairarapa. The produce hall is filled to its utmost/ capacity with exhibits of factory cheese and produce of all kinds. • Messrs. A. L. Wilson and Co will 'sell at their rooms, to-day, at 2 o'clock,, a collection of leather Gladstone, tennis, cricket, and travelling bags and portmanteaux; also English harness, side saddles, and a lot of saddler's stock, English goods and travellers' samples; also, immediately after the above, a nice choice lot of E.P. ware, travellers' samples, for absolute sale. WANGANUI SHOW. As the time approaches tho date of the Wanganui Agricultural Show, its growth and popularity is very marked. The date of closing is October 31, and Saturday next is the last day for entries. Exhibitors are showing their appreciation by forwarding their entries quickly, and a larger number have been received than ever before at so early a period. The large entries of horses and dogs, and tho quantity and quality of cattle, sheep, and poultry promise a fine show. A wool exhibit, consisting of forty different species will be shown, and many others or an instructive character. In tho jog section amongst othor valuable prizes, The New Zealand Fox Terrier Club/silver challenge shield value 25 guineas, is offered for' best New Zealand bred wire-haired fox terrier dog; the Delegates' Trophy, value three ■ guineas, for best fox terrier puppy, wire or smooth, bred in New Zealand; and the Irish Terrier Club, too, send a marble clock for best Irish terrier dog! and set of fish knives and forks for bitch. With so' many attractions, visitors should note the date 6 of the show, November 11 and 12, and avail thtemselves of the opportunity to visit Wanganui.
