Mr. J. G. Duncan, proprietor of the Waikariae Stud, has had the ill-fortune to lose the thoroughbred stallion Kilcheran, who was killed by an accident at Waikanae yesterday morning. Kilcheran was an exceptionally wull-bred horse, being by the St. Leger winner Kihvarlin, from Emita, by Galopin, from Burgundy, by Hermit. As a racehorse ho did very well in England, his total winnings exceeding £3000, and he was credited with very fast times in some of his races. Imported to the Dominion some three years v ag;o, Kilcheran had not yet had an opportunity of reaching fame at the stud, but during his short career he got very promising stock, and some of his youngsters which have just joined the racing ranks look like winning beforo long. Besides beiuj; a very handsome sire, his disposition was oi the best, and the majority of racing men who had seen him were confident that he would have a successful career. Ho was insured for a substantial amount, which, however, will not represent his real value. His place at the Waikanae Stud will be filled next 'season by Benzouian, recently purchased ill England.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

The Masterton Cup will be run 011 Thursday. S. Reid will probably ride Grand Slam in the New Zealand Cup. , Mr. Harry Piper leaves for Gisborno this morning to officiate as starter at tho Poverty Bay Turf Club's spring meeting on Thursday and Friday next. Duart will not be taken to the Masterton meeting. Ho will be sent home to Auckland early nest week and treated to a spell. It is understood that Mr. A. F. Douglas will tako ■ a team of half-a-dozen horses to Sydney in tho autumn. C. Jenkins will be unable to go to the SJastortoh meeting, so G. Prico has been engaged to ride King Post in the Masterton Cup. Mr. Liskirk's other horse, lliro, will probably be ridden by 'tV. Ryan. Ikon has not been accepted for in the Masterton Cup, but Gold Crest's half-sister wjll probably be seen out at Ellcrslic on Saturday week. On Saturday morning, the New Zealand Cup candidates, Master Dolaval and Zimmerman, were associated in a trial gallon at Trcntham. They went once round on the outside of tho course proper, and finished , together in 2min. 24sec. Both horses shaped satisfactorily, and as ilic gallop was accomplished after tho other horses had worked on the track the timo reads fairly well. Trainers leaving for Riccarton this week should note that nominations for. the Feilding Jockey Club's sprihg meeting fall due on Friday , next, acceptances for the Waver-ley-Waitotara meeting on Saturday, and entries for the Wangauui Guineas, 1909, and the Jackson Stakes, 1910, close on Monday. The 'Welliiigton Pony and Galloway Racing Club is having tho home bend on the Miramar Racecourse altered, and the work will be completed before the next race meeting, when it is hoped tho bend will be more easily negotiated. By the Maori for Lyttelton last night, Harrv Cutts took Applegarth, Somersault, and Goldbeater homo to Riccarton. F. Tilley took Apa and Ambrosian, and S. Waddell took Zimmerman, North Head, Pellicle, St. Aidan, Diamond Star, and Daybeam. The Cambridgeshire Stakes will be run at Newmarket, England, to-morrow, J. Farmer, H. Eva, M. M'Grath, D. Moraghan, and H; Moore will tako their teams t:o Riccarton by to-night's boat. Jos. Prosser and C. Pritchard will probably leave for tho sceno on Thursday night F. Porter has in his charge a.t Gisborno Auldearn, Gladsiuuir, Te Arai, and the imported horso Cheshire. The latter is just getting over a severe attack of influenza, which he contracted shortly after his arrival in Gisborno. To Arai is said to be very well just now, and may pick up a race shortly when tho company is not lijgh class. F.,D. Jones, who is to ride,Zimmerman in the New Zealand Cup, left for Riccarton by ■the Maori lasfc, night. F. S. Jones, first horseman for tho Ghokcboro stable, was also a passenger by tho Maori. ' \ The Porirua tea,m, which had been racing at Trcntham, returned homo yesterday morning. It is pleasing to chronicle that Mr. H. Guisford's high-priced colt, Tawhaki, which met with a mishap in the Juvenile Handicap, has made considerable improvement, and will probably be able to race again after a brief spell. The Birkenhead filly Mistime has arrived at Gisborno from Auckland to fulfil her engagements at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting on Thursday and Friday. * Owing to his mishap at- Trenthaui, "Whetumarama may not continue his engagement in the Stewards' Handicap. Mr. V. O'Neill, n'lio has been appointed assistant starter for the Masterton Racing Club's spring meeting, has had some experience at Dringing unruly horses to the starting barrier beforo to-daj. At the Christchurch Ra.cing Club's Exhibition meeting two years ago, he undertook to get Signalman to the post in the Anniversary Handicap. The Clanranald horso was very speedy at tho time,- but was nervous and' bad tempered at\the post and, was continually being left in his races. In the event in question, O'Neill, after a struggle, got him safely to the post, and he got away , with his field'and won the race.
