THE TURF.

|"By Glencoe.] WELLINGTON RACING CLUE'S SPRING MEETING. PEARCE HANDICAP WON BY SIR. FRISCO. WILSON RIDES THREE WINNERS. Although rain fell early, on Saturday morning, tho weather cleared by 9 o'clock and remained fine for tho concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting. A large crowd journeyed to the racecourse, but tho attendance was not quite as good as usual for a Saturday. The heavy rains that had fallen the previous night had materially r.fTectcd the racing track, and tho going was heavy. In tho majority of. tho events the fields wore small, only three starters going to tho post in tho concluding race. Notwithstanding this, however, backers wero all at sea, and outsiders prevailed in more than half the races. This probably had something to do with a shrinkage in the totalisator investments, Saturday's total being over £6000 less than for tho corresponding.day last year, and the total for the two days being £10,516 loss than last year's total. - Thirty-one bookmakers wore licensed on Saturday, twelve inside and nineteen outside. The racing on tho whole was interesting, but in the principal event, tho Pearcc Handicap, several of tho horses dwelt 011 the mark, and Crucinella, who was practically tho last to get away, probably lost the race on this account, as she was only beaten by a neck by Sir Frisco. Tho victory of the latter was, however, very popular. Tho Juvenile Handicap was won by Daybeam, a full brother to Dawn, who was making his first appearance under silk. Tho Hastings lightweight jockey, L. Wilson, rode throe winners during tho afternoon. The following are tho results: — PETONE HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. One mile and a half. Mr. F. J. Attfield's b. g. Master Douglas, by Douglas—Pearlshot, syrs., lOst. 81b. (Jno. O'Connell) 1 Mr. J. C'orry's Jolly Roger, 9st. 91b. ' „ , (M'Connon) 2 Mr. W. Smart s Liberator, lOst. 21b. (Pritchard) 3 Also started: Gleam, lOst. 131b. (Stewart), and Yosami, 9st. (Cairns). Liberator and Jolly Roger reached the first hurdlo almost together, but passing the stand Liberator wasiabout three lengths in front of Gleam and Jolly Roger. At the hurdle near the seven-furlong post the field was buiiched, and Gleam lost hor rider. Master Douglas took the lead shortly, after and led round, the bend. Jolly Roger got 011 terms at the last hurdle, but Slaster Douglas camo away in the straight, and won by nearly three lengths, with a similar distance between second and third. Time, 2min. 59 l-sscc.

TARARUA HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sots. Seven furlongs. Mr. F. Dorset's ch. m. Bluo Ribbon, by . Blue Jacket—Yataghan, 4yrs., 7st. (T. Carroll) 1 Hon. J. D. Ormond's Pollielo, Bst. 41b. (Jones) 2 Mr. A. R. White's Voetgang, 7st. 131b. (Lowe) .3 Also started: Sandstream, Bst. 111b. (Griffiths). Sandstream was slow to leave tho mark, and Pellicle hopped off with the load from Voetgang and Bluo Ribbon. At the four-fur-long post tho order was Pellicle, Voetgang, Sandstrqam, and Bluo Ribbon last. Entering the straight, Sandstream fell back, and Blue Ribbon closed up. Pellicle was going comfortably at the distance, but Bluo Ribbon camo with a great rush, and after an excellent finish won by a head. Voetgang a poor third and Sandstream twenty lengths further aivay last. Time, lmin. 35sec. TRENTHAM HURDLE HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. Olio mile and three-quarters. Mr. E. Jaekman's br. g, Paparaohi, by Papakura—llongotea, syrs., 9st. 51b. (W. Young) 1 Mrs. J. Bull's Mahoe, lOst. 31b. (Stewart) 2 Mr. R. W. Paterson's Snip, 9st.(Jno. O'Connell) 3 Also started: Lyrist, list. lib. (Cochrane), and Playmate, 9st. 121b. (Al'Connon). Paparaehi and Playmate wore first t-o show out, and the former cleared the first couplo of hurdles a little ahead of Playmate. Passing tho stand Paparaehi and Playmate were together, followed by Snip, Lyrist and Mahoo in that order. Paparaehi drew away again' at the mile post, and though challenged in the straight by Mahoe, he won comfortably by a length and a quarter, with Snip a poor third, and Lyrist aud Playmato last. Time, 3min. 31sec. JUVENILE HANDICAP, of 200 sots. For two-year-olds. Four furlongs. Hon J. D. Ormond's br. g. Daybcam, by Birkenhead (imp.)— Eos, 7st. 91b. (L. Wilson) 1 Sir Geo. Clifford's Applegarth, 7st'. 121b. (F. E. Jonos) 2 Mr. W. E. Bidwill's Expansion, Bst. 81b. (S. Reid) 3 Also started: Tawhaki, Bst. 81b. (Jenkins); Somersault, 7st. 101b. (Paul); Maori King, 7st. 121b. (H. Price); Ambrosian, 7st. 121b. (Oliver); Kiltie Lass, 7st. 121b. (Cress); Merry Oliver, 7st. 101b. (Hatch); Marengo, 7st. 101b. (Lowe); and Lady Medallist, ?st. 71b. (G. Price). Lady Medallist was left several lengths at tho start. Tawhaki and Applegarth made play from Merry Oliver, Daybeam, and Expansion. Applegarth was in command at tho distance, hard pressed by Daybeam and Expansion, with Somersault coming fast on tho outside. In a good finish Daybeam won by three parts of a length from Applegarth, with Expansion a good third, Somersault fourth, Lady Medallist fifth,, and Marengo last. Time, 52scc. PEARCE HANDICAP, of 300 sovs.; second horse to receivo 40 sovs. and the third horso 20 sovs. from the stake. One mile. Mrs. M. Moore's b. h. Sir Frisco, by i San Francisco (imp.)—Waitemata, 4yrs„ Sst. 31b. ... (R. E. Hatch) 1 Mr. W. F. M'Beth's b. m. Crucinella, by San Francisco (imp.)—Charente, 4yrs., 6st. 111b (F. (Cress); and White Lie, 7st. (H. Price). Apa took the lead just ahead of Sir Frisco and Taitoko, after whom came Irish Rille, Glenullin, and California, but St. Aidan, Crucinella, and San Julio were badly left. At the six-furlong post Taitoko led from Sir Frisco; Apa, Irish Rifle; and Vasa. On reaching the haystack, Sir Frisco went, to tho front, and at tho half-milo post had a clear lead from Apa, after whom camo Taitoko, Irish Rifle, Vasa, and White Lie, with Crucinella moving up, and St. Aidan and San Julio still last. Entering the straight Sir Frisco, was out by himself, Apa, Irish Rifle, and Vasa wore next, and Crucinella was coming fast on tho outside. Inside the distance Vasa and Crucinella drew up to Sir Frisco, but the latter lasted long enough to win by a neck from Crucinolla, with Vasa nearly two lengths away third, Apa fourth, Glenullin fifth, California sixth, Whito Lio seventh, and San Julie last. Time, lmin. 47 3-ssoc. NAINAI HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. Six furlongs. Mr. T. F. Gotklard's ch. g. Tiptoe, by Sylvia Park—Hail;, oyrs., Bst. 21b. (C. Jenkins) 1 Trustees Mrs. A. M. E, Lowe, rider of Mon<^mi;sras before the stewards at the conclusion of* the race, but his explanation as to his handling of his' mount was accepted as satisfactory. SPRING TRIAL STAKES;'of. 100 sovs. For three-year-olds and upwards. Weightfor age. Six furlongs. ;" Mr. J. Ames's br. f. Merrivqnia, by Merriwee—Livonia, 3yrs., 7st;' 101b.; (L. Wilson) 1 Mr. J. Bracken-took'up the running, and led by a couple of lengths till well into the straight, where' v.Mcrrivonia threw out a challenge, and "after .a* good finish won by a length; Cork a - fair third, Toango fourth, Ukraine fifth;: and -Flora last. Time, lmin. 21 l-sseon RUAHINE HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Six fur10ng5........... , k _~.. Mr. H. Broadbent's blk. ni. Ad vantage, by Advance —Lady Spec, 4yrs.," 7st. 101b (L.' Wilson) 1 Mr. A. Peters's Vinco, 6st.-71b- (F. Cress) 2 Also started: Wketumarama," -9st. -'(W. Young). V Whetumarama was in the lead after going two furlongs, but burst a blood-vessel and had to be pulled up, leaving Advantage' to win .easily by a couple of lengths from Vinco. Time, lmin. 22sec. NOTES ON THE RACING. Notwithstanding Liberator's easy victory in the Hack Hurdles on Wednesday,. Master Douglas was. selected as a slightly... better, favourite than the Freedom gelding !■ forthe first raco on Saturday. From -tlie- start -Liber-, ator appeared to bo-in trouble,-and did, not." jump at all well. The bestiie was to run a very moderate third behind Master Douglas and Jolly Roger. Master Douglas lookod to bo beaten at' tho last hurdle, but had too much • pace for Jolly Roger in tho run homo.' Gleam knocked down the third hurdle and lost her rider. The Daystar .maro then galloped with the field till sho camo to grief at the hurdlo near tho three-furlohg post: Crucinella and Mallet were withdrawn from tho Tararua Hack and reserved for the ; Pearce Handicap. This left but four starters for tho Tararua Hack, Pellicle being sent out. a hot favourite. Tho Birkenhead filly-had-, Voetgang and Sandstream beaten at the entrance to the straight and looked to be winning easily, but Blue Ribbon came with a raro turn of speed over furlong and just got up in timo to win,-by half a head. Blue Ribbon is a . half-sister to Paritutu,-, and won her first, raco at the Otaki meeting-last. June.- She has a tremendous finish,, and lcoks like developing into a stayer.; On the morning of the races she was credited with- i /smart gallop on the tracks. Tho withdrawal of Exnioor and Gleam left fivo starters to contest the Trentham Hurdles. Playmate and Lyrist were the. popular fancies, but neither gained a place. Playmato appeared .to want schooling,, as he tired very quickly. Lyrist, like Liberator, [ ran much-below, his form .of Wednesday. Paparaehi won comfortably from. Mahoe, ,but tho raco must have been a....real, good thing, for the latter but that his rider lost-a stirrupiron at the third fence. Under the circumstances Stewart did remarkably well to get the big horse so close to the winner. Snip, had a change of jockey to > see if he would gallop any bettpr, .but lie ran much the same as on Wednesday., v

All the acceptors lined up for tho Juvenile Handicap; and the Held of eleven caused the * starter some little troubled' Expansion -wasgonerallv voted a certainty for the event, but when the going became heavy his trainer-was not' over-confident" about the; chalices, .of. -the Birkenhead gelding. Ho never front, but finished close up third. -The winner,. Daybeam, a full-brother to Dawn; had a. good passage through the race,: and- won. nicely at the finish.' He claims, an engagement in the Welcomo Stakes at Riccarton next month. Applegarth shaped nicely in .tlie heavy going, and; as generally oxpected, finished in front of his stablemate, Somersault.; ..The latter, however, might have been closer ;than fourth but for it bump that ho got when making, his. run at the home turn. Ta.whaki was.l'gqingwell with the leaders ivhen--ho?.broke-down. It was at first thought that the mishap would put an end to tho racing career.of Armlet'sbrother, but his trainer informed me on Saturday night that the breakdown was probably not as serious as ho had-at first imagined. -Mr. H. Gaisford, owner.-, of the colt, considered him anything but well treated in the handicap,- but sportsmanlikeidocidedr.to start him. Under the circumstaiicesitho colt's breakdown was most unfortunate. Of the other candidates," Merry ; -Oliver showed plenty of pace over tho' first-couple of furlongs, and the Australian-bred Lady Medallist, who got away b'aj3ly|_-finisjied : -well.' JJaori King was rather dfs'a'ppbinting. - .There were twelve starters .fbr.ih'e ~l?ear, iie. Handicap. Sir Frisco oponecTfavoUri.te,' but when it was seen that F. D.~'Joiies wa'B'ridi'n'g', California, there was a rush .to bniijk'the big chestnut. He eventually carried :more money, than anything else on the but' the bookmakers aver that' Sir. .'Frisco was their favourite. Tho start' was . a ' .poor oito, the horses moving olf in straggling■■"fashion-. Sir Frisco got away with 'the''first division, and being taken to the fi:ont.;'early','scored' a rather lucky victory from Cniciiifella.'-'-Tho : latter was last; to leave thq'mark,; arid''Had' a lot of ground to make up.;'"After Vgoing'on the outside of her field, she-finished with great gameness, and if little' Coleman had drawn his whip ten yards sooner he would most likely have lanciod tho San Francisco! mare a winner. California.commenced:betteron Saturday, but he does' riot appear 1 to bequite himself, and then he 'had-*a-big-weight to carry through the heavy ."goiiig. .The''two" New Zealand, Cup candidate's", Ap'S "an'd Glenullin, both made a faii- ! showing. Tiptoe, who failed to gain a place in tho Shorts Handicap on Wednesday, had a. very easy victory in'the Nainai . Handicap, the extra furlong and a change of jockey apparently making a wonderful difference to him. Saturday's race will .not mulct.the chest-, nut in a penalty for the Stewards' Handicap, at Riccarton. Master Souit, who With'. Trii-., ganini enjoyed favouritism,' had' lib chance with the winner, and on..Saturday's form cannot bo given any say. in the Stewards' Handicap. Grand Slam and Riflemaid, who claim engagements in the New Zealand Cup, were both finishing well. • Bracken' was-made a warm • favourite for tho Spring trial Stakes, but after getting a big break on the field lie failed to see the journey out. and was caught and beaten in tho last fifty yards by Merrivonia. Tho latter gavo L. Wilson his second Winning ride during the afternoon, and lie followed it up by riding Advantage to victory in.tho last raco, making his total three for tho afternoon and four for the meeting. • Of the three starters in the Ruahirio Hack Handicap, Whetuniarama was in a class by himself, and he was consequently made the hottest favourite of tho meeting. Practically nothing but disaster had attended backers through the meeting, and the last race was again disastrous to them, for Whetuniarama when looking all over a winner burst a bloodvessel, and had to lie pulled up. The Advance gelding was going beautifully wheu lie'put his foot in a hole and stumbled, and it was evi- < dently the effort in getting.to his feet which caused the trouble. WINNING OWNERS. The Wellington Racing Club distributed tho sum of £28-10 in stakes on the two'days of the Spring Meeting.' Mr. W. E. Bidwill heads the list, his colt Provocation winning the Wcllesloy Stakes, and Expansion running third in the Juvenile Handicap. The complete list is as follows:—Mr. W. E. Bidwill, £415; Air. H.
