BIG BEQUESTS.

— <r- \ A WINDFALL FOR AUCKLAND. Auckland is fortunate in the. public spiritedness of its citizens. A striking instance is the caso of Mrs. Knox, of Symoids Street, who, dying last week, willed away nearly £70,000 to charity and deserving pub- ' lie institutions established in Auckland unci elsewhere. , Believing that there was a great necessity for a home in Auckland for poor people suffering from incurable diseases, Mrs. Knox set apart a sum of £20,000 for the erection'and maintenance of a suitable building. The next local necessity which she- considered required to bo met with the erection and endowment of a night shelter for homeless men, and towards, this object she bequeathed £2500. The Jubilee Institute for the Blind benefits to the extent of £1500, and St. Mary's Homes, Otaliuhn, to the extent of £1000, while to. all the other various local charities sums of from £200 to £500 have been bequeathed; ■ Whilo remembering local institutions, the ■ deceased did not forget her birthplace,and she accordingly directed that the suni of £4000 bo remitted to Ardstraw, Ireland, for the relief of the deserving poor, and a further £500 for the improvement of' the Presbyterian Church there. Dr. Barnardo's Homes are also to receive £1000, and the Danneford Mission to British soldiers ill India £200.
