PENNY POSTAGE.
AMERICA WILL RECIPROCATE. THE NEW ISLAND MAIL SERVICE. Some considerable time ago, New Zealand, at the instance of her Postmaster-General (Sir Joseph Ward) reduccd the postags on lettors- to the United States," as well as to many othor countries, to one penny. Some disappointment was felt that America did not reciprocate. Now, however, Sir Joseph Ward has received a cablegram from the Postmaster-General at Washington advising that from this time forward the rate of postage on letters from the United' States to Now .Zealand ivill be made uniform with that on letters from New Zealand to the States. Sir Joseph Ward naturally regards this concession with' great .satisfaction. The American Postmaster-General has also cabled expressing pleasure at the arrangement by which the United States mail service to Tahiti will be made available for communication with New Zealand, through the Union Company's steamers, which are to be subsidised by the Domiuion Government for that purpose.
