CAN TOMATOES BE EXPORTED?
The possibilities of' export trade in tomatoes to England are touched on in a letter to the Nelson " Colonist." Tho correspondent saysln a few months wo hope to have the direct steamer calling at Nelson to take' away-our frozen meat, and if those steamers could also get cargoes of tomatoes, apples, etc., it would-mean a big thing for the prosperity of the place. In sotpo'.quarters it is stated that _ the' hop-growing industry is threatened with extinction by the growth of the No-License movement, and tomato-growing may prove a profitable substitute. Anyway, the whole matter is worth serious ' consideration by the local growers and their association, and I feel sure that our live Agricultural Department - would assist'in making inquiries into the possibilities." ' • Although, ripe tomatoes are not good keeper's; tomatoes that are gathered green keep for a long period; so that there is a good amount of senso in the correspondent's suggestion.
