INSPECTION OF MACHINERY.
NEW OFFICERS APPOINTED. Messrs. William Gordon' Bell and Peter M'Kenzio havo/been appointed to tho Inspection of Machinery Department. In addition to their employment as Inspectors of Machinery, they will' undertako tlio duties of Surveyors of Ships and Examiners of Marino Engineers, Lands. Engineers, and Engine Drivers. Each gentleman holds a firstclass engineer's certificate of competency issued by the Board of Trade. „ Mr. Bell was born at Richmond, Nelson, aiul served his apprenticeship to the' engineering at tho foundry of Messrs. W. Cable and Co., of Wellington. Going Homo to gain .experience, lie entered the engineering works of• Messrs. Maudsley, Sons, and Field, Ltd.,' in London," afterwards serving at sea for ten years in various British and Mexican steamers. During his stay in Mexico 110 obtained a first-class engineer's certificate of competency in the Mexican Mercantile Marine. Returning to. New Zealand in 191)0, ho was employed for some timo at tho Christclnirch Meat Company's works at Picton and Islington. Since then ho_ has been omployed as chief engineer of various boats in the New Zealand trade. Mr. M'Kenzio's apprenticeship to tho engineering; in the shipbuilding yards of Messrs'.!). and W. Henderson, of Glasgow. He then joined the Clan Line of Glasgow steamers, -remaining in this service for eight years. Additional experience was gained in "various sliip .ancj dredgo building yards at GlasgoW and 'Renfrew. During' tho' last -three years lie has been in tho service of" the Bluff Harbour- Board as chief engineer of the rjredge Murihiku and tho s.s. Theresa Ward. While at Glasgow Mr.' M'Kenzio attended tho Technical School connected with the science and arts department, South Kensington, and he holds cortificatcs of competency in a number of subjects.relating to his profession.. , -, .
