In October, 1886, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's old liner Tainui was launched, and in her day was one of the'finest vessels afloat. Captain E. J. Evans, at present Marine Superintendent in New Zealand'for the Shaw-Sayill Company,'-was : a number of years in command of the vessel. The old Tainui, .which, on her first appearance, was referred to as a "gigantic vessel, was of 5200 tons ■ register,. 5000 horsepower, 440 ft. in length,' and 46ft. in beam. She was capable of doing 15J knots an hour, although usually 13J was her average, on a consumption of 56 tons ■of coal a day. Her engines'were of the triple-expansion type, with a cylinder .pressure'of 1601b. to' the'square inch. It is stated 1 that slw vas capable of carrying 24,680 carcasses frozen mutton, end, in addition, an enormous amount of general cargo. Thirty-eight':' days, .22hours, '55minutes,' from Lyttelton'to Plymouth (11,110 miles) was one of the 'old ;Tainui's performances,: and on that occasion the-actual'steaming time was 37 days, 20. hours,:37 minutes. ••• 1 : Although it is 22 .years' since• the 'then "gigan-: tic liner ■ Tainui was..lauiiohed, size and comfort "and not speed .• seem .. to have been 'the principal considerations- in. constructing the new Tainui; ■ the latest addition to the companv's passenger fleet. Her'. dimensions are as .''follow':—Length, 477 ft:; breadth, 60|ft.j. depth, 42Vft. and sho has 6500- horse-power. The new Tainui has a sea-going speed of 13 knots, and is propelled, by two sets'of tripleexpansion engines, working at a cylinder pressure of 2051b. The auxiliary machinery in connection with the engine and boiler equipment is of the mo:>t improved type throughout, and includes a silent ash hoist with automatic tipping bucket and. internal shoot. The ballast' piimping plan:, has a capacity of 200 tons per . hour, ■ and efficient fire-extinguishing apparatus has been fitted .throughout the vessel. Whereas the old Tainui was only capable of carrying about 25,000 carcasses of mutton, the new- vessel will be able to comfortably stow away 100,000 carcasses. Her registered tonnage (10,500 tons) is more'than double that of the erstwhile Tainui,. which, in her day, was considered a'floating palace.
