A Press Association cablegram received from Sydney at 11.35 o'clock last evening announces the death of Mr. Jas. Inglis, merchant and author, aged 62 years. Bom in Forfarshire, Scotland, on November 24, 1845, the son of a clergyman, Mr. Inglis became a medallist at Edinburgh University. He proceeded to New Zealand in 1864, and.to India- in 1866, and settled in. Australia in 1877. He travelled extensively, and was, in turn, an indigo ■ planter, merchant-, and journalist. Ho was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for New England in 1884, and sat for twelve years, and was Minister of Public Instruction in tlie Parkes Government, 1887-9. He was president of tho Sydney Chamber of Commerce for two years, and was chairman of the Sydney Harbour Collieries and New Hillgrove Proprietary, and- a director of tho ltoyal Prince Alfred Hospital, a trustee of the Savings Bank of New South Wales, and president of tho Sydney Branch of the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce for Australia, lie was also head of James Inglis and Co., Ltd., tea and general merchants, whose business was founded in Sydney in 1881. His works include "Sport and Work "on tho Nepal Frontier," "Tent Livo in Tigerland," "Our Australian Cousins," "Our New Zealand Cousins," "The Humour of the Scot," and "The Story of tho Tea Trade." Tho annual meeting of the Wellington Umpires' Association will bo held in Armit's itooms,' Lambton Quay, to-night, at 8 o'clock. Unless more interest is taken in the working of this association, there is more than a probability that it will disband. Two floors in brick warehouse, directly behind tho Wairarana Buildings, Lambton Quay, are advertised to let by Mr. George S. Nathan, Union Bank Buildings, Hunter Street. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Masterton, advertise particulars of their spring cattle sale , to be held at Masterton on Tuesday, October 27.
