SEATOUN TRAM LINE.

■ KARAKA BAY EXTENSION. ANXIOUS RESIDENTS. ■ The inhabitants of Karaka and Worser Bays aro in a state of "distinct unrest" on account of a prospect of being at any moment cut off from the outsido world. Tho grievance was aired at a meeting of tho Mir&mar Borough Council last evening through the medium, of a petition, which «et forth the position as follows:— '"Wo tho undersigned ratepayers'and residents of Worser and Karaka Bays, now being very much inconvenienced by tho unsuitable ferry service now running, and. which mjght cease altogether at any time, desire to impress upon your Worship and councillors tho distinct unrest which prevails in this part of the borough. Many parents find it so inconvenient, for tho children'and themselves to get to town that it must mean many leaving the district, and keep others from coming. We, therefore, pray that the Scatoun tram lino bo extended as far as Marshall's Point, and we believe now is the time to do it, whilo tho remodelling of tho roads is going on. We, therefore, urge the importance of this , route, in lieu of the tunnel, which has been found impracticable as tho only • right and just way of removing this marked discontent. We feci that our . district has not received its fair share of transit sorvice." There were over 50 signatories. The' Mayor, Mr. C. J. Crawford, said the extension would have to 1)0 undertaken not only for the convenience of tho residents, but because the beach happened to be a particularly valuable one. But whether the borough could tacldo tho financial aspect of tho question at once was another question. An estimate of the ebst could be got within £100 without the aid of an engineer, because it was now so well known what theso matters cost. Councillor Brody moved: —"That an estimate of tho cost be made, and the matter bo left in the hands of the Public Works Committee to report." The Mayor seconded, and tho motion was carried.
