OTAKI MAORI RAGINC CLUB'S SPRINC ' MEETINC. IRISH RIFLE WINS THE HANDICAP. The Ot*lci Maori Racing Club is not usually fortunate with the weather experienced for its race meetings, but it was an ideal day yesterday for the commencement of the spring meeting, and a large crowd was present. The rain which had fallen the day before had not materially affected the course, and the going was in capital order. The 2olds for the different events were scarcely up .to the average, but nearly all the finishes tvero well contested. Irish-Rifle annexed tho principal event, the Labour jay Handicap, after a good race with Swimming Belt. Tho totalisator investments for the day amounted to £5995, a decroaso of £1134 as compared with the first'day last year, but as eleven bookmakers wero licensed' the actual financial result would be better than on that occasion. The results, were all in favour of the bookmakers/ as several hot favourites were/beaten during tlio afternoon. Details of the, racing are as follow— FLYING HANDICAP, of 80 sovs. Six -..furlongs. NOTES AND COMMENTS. ["By Glencob."| The withdrawal of Dusky Morn and Gipsy Belle (two Stewards' .Handicap candidates) took a little interest from the Flying Handicap. Dusky Morn was not brought from Wanganui. Moata was the other scratching. It was a really good betting race, Duart being installed favourite, but all the others were well supported. Lord Soult looked nice, but evidently wants another race or two before he will bo in proper racing condition. He showed 1 his old dash from the barrier yesterday, but tired very much in' the Inst furlong. Duart was kept behind for the first four furlongs, but once ho was asked to gallop he'bounded to the front and won very comfortably. Toa Tuhi, who got away badly, easily accounted for the other three candidates.
Dnil, Waimaria, and Tho Dane declined their engagements in the Maiden Hurdles, for which Tauira (Mahaki —Young TJira) was made a very hot favourite. He was palpably soro before going out, however, and though ho jumped satisfactorily, he was unable to see the journey out. He is a nice cut of a jumper and looks a likely sort for the big country. Don Carlos, the winner, fenced faultlessly throughout, and aft-er tho second hurdle lie had the race in hand. Yosami was the best-conditioned of the candidates, and showed plenty of pace between the hurdles, but her jumping was bad. 'Whimper, a half-brother to that useful mare_ Chatterer, looks as if he might be useful with a little moro experience. Of the three starters in the To Hiwi Memorial Stakes, King Post was made favourite. Scenery made play to the straight, whore King Post was a couple of lengths behind Iranui. Jenkins drew the whip on the favourite, but he was only able to boat Scenery, Iranui winning with a little in hand. The Soult mare is very well, and cut the mile out in good style. The good field of twelve went to the post in the Maiden Plate. Te Kahurangi was made a better favourite than Roosevelt, with- Clemency next in demand. Te Kahurangi was the best looking candidate, and was full of life in tho birdcage. Ho got away smartly, and had a good lead when tho straight was reached. Halfway up tho running ho appeared to be, winning comfortably, but little Cross got to work on lloosevelt, and stole a march on tho favourite, who was unable to battle it out with the Menschikoff colt. Roosevelt has evidently benefited by the recent racing ho has had, and he was excellently handled by Cress, who had ridden Duart to victory earlier in the afternoon. Tho Masterton lightweight is one of the most promising vof tho younger horsemen 1 - in' : tliis"'district ) and should have a good future before him. Co.v, who raced in the Maiden atWanganui last, rriontli, appears,.to improving, and might win a scurry later on in the season. Reumac, a full brother to Rendrook, was among the competitors, but failed to show up. Marutoa, by Malatua, showed a fair amount of paco for four furlongs, but tired towards v tho finish.
■ Tho sories of beaten favourites was broken in the Labour Day Handicap by the victory of Irish Rifle, who was much better backed than the second favourite. Swimming Belt. There was a good deal of delay at tlie start, causcd by Duart breaking through the tapes twice, and galloping a couple of furlongs, When the barrier was finally released, the Auckland horse quickly took the'' lead, and set a great pace to tlie straight, but the effort was too much for him, and was finally beaten out of a place. Since arriving at Otaki, he has not been eating too well, but is in great racing trim. Irish Rifle is very fit after his recent racing. Reid kept him in behind the leaders till the last furlong, and then took command. Ho had to be ridden right out to stall off the challenge of Swimming Belt, who was blacked badly when making nis run. Hiro, who was racing for tho first time since the Feilding Easter Meeting, finished , strongly, but had no chance with tho first two horses. The First Hack Hurdles saw another favourite, in Waimaria, most decisively defeated. Paparaehi led by several lengths till tho second to the last hurdle, where Lyrist overhauled him and won very easily. -The •Officer gelding was a class above the opposition, and I see no reason to withdraw the good opinion I formed of him as a hurdler at the Ma,rton meeting. Waimaria will evidently want more racing before he gets on the winning list. He was very' distressed after tho race. The Dane showed plenty of pace, but dwelt badly at his jumps. Papatawa finished strongly, and got within a head of the second horse.
Zoraida, who was reserved for the Welter Hack, was the only withdrawal from the Stewards' Hack. Whetumarama was the favourite selection, but after playing up at the post he got badly away, and raced behind the field until the last hundred yards, where he got fairly into his stride, and finishing strongly was close up fourth. He was unlucky. Heroward, who looked very much in the rough, led for half a. mile, but eventually dropped back to last. _ Investment was less fancied than anything save Glentui. She was always handy, however, and won rather easily at the finish. In the Welter Hack, Playmate, Zorajda, Rangihaota, Buoyant, and Flintgun were all well supported on the machine, but Playmate was tho bookmakers' favourite. He led from start to finish, but had to be ridden out to beat Zoraida. Flintgun was slow to commence, but with better luck could scarcely have troubled the winner, who is a better horse on the flat than generally be-, lieved. Grand Myrella was last throughout the race. Lord Carlyon, who won tho Moonga Handicap at Cauliield yesterday, won £ho Goodwood Handicap, six furlongs, at tho Adelaide Autumn meeting last May. He had 9st. 31b. on that occasion, and tho Now Zealand horse Grenadier was asked to concedo him 111b., so the South Australian handicapper must have hold a good opinion of the. son of Soult. Grenadier has only Bst. 111b. in the Stewards' Handicap to be decided *t Riccarton next month. Welcome Trist, winner of tho Coongy Handicap, is engaged'in tho Caulfield Cup, with Bst. Probable, winner of the Mosgiel Handicap at Dunedin, has now incurred a penalty for tho New Zealand Otip, but as hia original weight was . only 7st., the penalty should really be useful, is it will most likely mean that the Possible horse will now havo tho services of a stronger jockey. Probable has now won in his last threo starts. At the Waikanae Stud early in the week, Lady Principal (The Officer—The Shrew) foaled a colt to Achilles. The Park Stakes at Grcennioadows is tho first race in which California has competed without gaining a place. The well-known local owner, "Mr. A. Barclay," returned by tho Malieno yesterday from a holiday trip to Australia. C. Jenkins and R. Hatch are running one another very close in the jockey's winning
list. Jenkins drew level with Hatch at tho Hastings meeting, but Hatch rodo two winners at Greenmeadows yesterday to Jenkins's ono at Otaki, so that tho younger horseman is in the lead again. A private cablo message received in Wellington a few days ago mentioned that Mr. J. F. Buchanan had grown tired of Noctuiform, and that the horse was'to bo submitted to auction on October 14 (yesterday). It is possiblo that Multiform's son may return to New Zealand, as a local owner cabled home a commission to buy at a certain price. Racing will bo continued to-day at Otaki, at Napier Park, and at Dunedin. The Victorian Amateur Turf Club's mooting will be concluded at Caulfield on Saturday, when tho Cup will be decided. . NAPIER PARK RACINC CLUB'S SPRINC MEETINC. KING BILLY WINS THE PARK STAKES. CALIFORNIA NOT PLACED. (ni TMKGEAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Napier, October 14. The weather was fine in the morning for the first day of the Napier Park Club's spring meoting, which commenced to-day, but several showers fell in the afternoon. Tho course was m splendid condition, and thero was a capital day's sport. The sum of £6732 was invested on tho totalisator, as compared with £9533 on tho first day or tho last spring meeting, showing a deficiency of £2806. As against this, however, thirteen bookmakers' fees amounted to £193, which equalled, so far as the club's profits were concerned, additional investments _on the machino of £2412. Only two favourites won during tho day. The following are tho results:— GREENMEADOWS HACK HURDLES, of 80 sovs. One mile and three-quarters. Mr. G. H. Hamilton's ch. g. Monarquo moved quickly to the front, and led for the greater part of the distance, and when tho straight was reached ho looked all over a winner. At tho distance, however, Reservoir, who had been lying second for the latter part of the journey, came to light and won cleverly by a bare length. Gold Dust was a poor third. Time, 3min. 17 2-ssec. At the seven-furlong post, Gold Thread had moved up into second place, with Loiret third and King Billy fourth. At the home turn, Comedian was well in front, with King Billy coming fast, and tho favourite California, who had had a bad passage throughout, lying fifth. Half-way up the straight,. Comedian gave way to King Billy, and California seemed to be in trouble.
