The produce year''.Closed on September 30, and ' taking the figured furnished in the monthly leaflets issued by tho Department of Industries and Commerce, there is a tremendous decline in tho values. Til some cases, indeed in. most cases, the decline is duo partly to the shrinkage in quantity exported, and partly to the lower range of values. Taking the figures for dairy produce, frozen meat, and hemp, the values compare as under:— i . 1907-S: 1906-7. £ ,£ -■•-Butter'-' ... ...'1,146,151 1,658,236 • Cheese.' . ..." ... 728,915 552,817 ' Beef ... 413,750 434,978 Mutton ... iC,382,319 , There is a decrease in these i seven items of ,£1,031,892, or a little mere than 17 per cent. The value of the dairy 'produce exported is less by .£335,987, or a little more than 15 per ' cent.; frozen meat exhibits a shrinkage of .£377,221, or nearly 11 l-3rd per cent., while' hemp shows a decline of .£378,681, or nearly 411 per cent. Hemp, of course, as is well known, has fallen in price- very considerably, and mainly for'this reason there is a shrinkage in "the export. For the twelve months ended September 30, 1908, a total of 19,507 tons was exported, while for the previous year the total was 31,019 tons, the decrease being 11,512 tons,, or just over ,37 per cent. Tho decrease has been most marked during the past three months,.'as the following will show:— ■ ' ' ' 1907-8 ' 1906-7 ■ ■■ '■ Tons. Tons. July ... 957 161GAngust ... ... 397 1275 September 802 ' 1637 2156 4558 ,A decrease is hero shown of 2402 tons, or nearly 53 per cent., and this feature is likely to become pronounced in the, succeeding months, because the present quotation for the fibre 1 is unprofitable, to most millers, with wages and working costs as they stand at present. Taking the quantities of dairy produce and ■frozen meat exported, we got the following:— /■ 1907-B.s iii 1906-7s„i si ; ' . ; Cwt. The exports of frozen nieat wert less by 331,107cwt., or nearly 15 per cent. Of other items of export, the figures for twelve .months are not available, but for the sil .months ended September 30, we are'able to' make a comparison. The figures are as under:— Six Mouths to Sept. 30. 1907-8. 1906-7. ■ i ' X £ Babbits ... ... 25,551 39,707 Kauri gum 208,383 312,676 " Hides 50,572 107,481 ' Skins ' ... ... 292,592 475,914 Tallow 241,228 273,565 ■ , Timber ... ... 158,50G 171,333 r Wool-.: ■■ ■' ... Wool, skins, hides, lind kauri gum jiayo- suffered •thronjh the American-financial crisis,-and tho figures for these items for the ~year-would show a big decrease.
