MR. CHAMBERLAIN.

(Rec. October 13, 10.5 p.m.) London, October 13. ' Mr. Chamberlain,' in a letter, states: "I un not without hope yet again to tako an active part in public life." [Mr. H. W. Lucy writes:—"From time to time paragraphs appear in the papers announcing that Mr.' Chamberlain has considerably profited by his stay at Aix-lcs-Bains, more or less vaguely hinting at permanent restoration to . health and return to active political life. • It • is said that these tilings are devised with the amiable object of keeping up the patient's spirits, when, glancing over the morning paper, he comes upon the announcement. Mr. Chamberlain, even though broken down iii health, is the last man to be deceived by these ,well-meant devices. Unhappily, there is not the slightest, hope beyond the desire, that tlio remainder of his life may be as comparatively painless as is his present condition. A member of the House of Commons,. recently home_ from' I Ais, describes that condition as pitiful in itb helplessness. He moves about only with the assistance'of the gracious lady who,has devoted the whole of her life and energies l tb the com'fort of Her husband. He can walk the fewest steps only with her assistance. Ho . cannot write, and speaks with painful difficulty. One comfort left to him, perennial in its; solace, ia his cigar. He has fairly good appetite, sleeps well, and never repines at his sudden tragio exile from the stage upon which he a few years ago played a leading part."]
