Mussulman boys annoyed French fishermen, who retaliated, causing tho Mussulmans to assist their boys. British police tried to suppress the trouble by firing blank cartridges and tho French used ball, killing one Mussulman and. seriously wounding eight. Later,-French rowdies looted Mussulman shops and gardens. RELIC OF FRENCH INDIA. Pondicherry, on the Coromandel coast of Inis tho chief of the French possessions in India. The area of the French settlement is 115 square miles, and the population is 174,450, that oi ' the town itself being 45,583. ..First settled by the French in 1G74, Pondicherry was taken from thorn in 1C93 by the Dutch; who restored it in" 1697. Britain has restored it to France, after capture, no fewer than three times.' A. French Governor, who is assisted by an eleotive General Council, resides at Pondicherry, and a senator and a deputy represent the colony in Paris.
