SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.
St. Mark's Cirls' Club. A very bright little social was given last night in St. Mark's schoolroom by the Girls' Club as the close to the first session of its existence. Tho members of the Young Men's Club wore present, and a very pleasant evening was spent. For the first part there'were games and a guessing competition, and this was followed by a short concert,' when the following items were contributed by members of tho club and their friends Pianoforte duets by the Misses Wells and Lamb, the Misses Bell and White, and tho Misses Browman and Lawton; pianoforte solos by Misses Etevoneaux and Lawton: and songs by Misses Lawton, E. Blow, Anyon, and M'Kay, and Mr. L. Barnes. During the evening the president, the Rev. A. M., Johnston, made a little speech expressing his pleasure at the progress the club had made during its six months of- existence, and saying how much of that progress had been due to tho energy and perseverance of tho secretary, -Miss Anyon. The club had to thank her, lie said, for its very existence, and it had been with very great regret that lie had heard Miss Anyon Was leaving New Zealand. On behalf of the members of tho club he thanked her for .what she had done, and presented her with a brooch as a token of their regard. Mr. F. Barltrop replied, thanking the president and the club, on' Miss Auyon's behalf, and/assuring them-that the work she had been able to do had been a source of great pleasure to her. After'the programme was over supper was served in tho clubroom downstairs, where the supper table was effectively decorated with brignt .spring flowers.. Dance at Greytown. A very.enjoyable-progressive euchre party and dance was given in tlie Foresters' Hall, Greytown, on Friday night by the members of the Groytoivn Golf Club (writes our correspondent). Progressive euchre was played until about 10.30, after which Mr. J. Cotter, the president, presented the prizes andalso tho various. trophies won during the year,. accompanying each with a neat little speech.. Supper was then partaken of, and dancing followed. Children's Fancy' Dross Party. On Friday evening'a very enjoyable children's party ivas given by Mrs. 0. E. Adams at her home-in Oriental Bay, and this was followed by, an "At Home" for grown-up people, a large number of guests being presentl at each. The children's supper was served in tho nursery, and that, for tho ojdbr' guests in tho morning room, whilo the diningroom and hall were used for dancing. Mrs. Adams received in a smart frock of' wedgwood blue .silk; Mrs. Adams (Hutt) wore a black and white gown; Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, black crepo do Chine; Miss Greenwood, palo •green silk, and her sister in pink silk;. Miss Barraud, black, and her sister wore a pink frock; Miss Jacbbsen," black silk. Other guests present were: Miss Knight, Miss Trevithick, Colonel Bauchop, Mr. Krceft, Mr. Morris, Mr. London, and Mr. Jourdain. The fancy dresses of the children woro. very pretty. Miss Margery A<lams wore a Kato Greenaway costume; Miss Eileen Adams appeared as a fairy, and Master Dartrey Adams as a clown., Miss Bridge was a tea-room girl, and her sister a- poppy; and Miss Burgess a nurse. Two brothers, who came as Chinese mandarin and jester were milch admired. Miss Doris Robieson was another Kate Greenaway child, and another dainty figure was a little Japanese ,girl. ••. Through tho evening tho children" romped and' danced; and evidently enjoyed themselves _ immensely. Tho music was supplied by a pianola, which the grown-ups found great amusement in playing.
The annual meeting of the Society for the protection of Women and Childreii is to be held on October 27. The Papaetonga Ladies' Hockey Club, at Ohau', gavo a very pleasant little dance at the Ohau Hall on Friday night as a wind-up to tho season, and the large gathering thoroughly enjoyed tho evening. . An enjoyablo danco was given in the ..Wellington Hall, Boulcott Street, J ou ( I"riday evening by Miss Ella Taylor. Tho chaperons were ALesdames Taylor, Ooffey, and Whiting. Miss Ella Taylor wore a frock of blue silk; .Mrs. Taylor, black relieved with cream; Mrs. Coffey, pale blue; Mrs. Whiting, black; Miss Taylor, pale pink silk; Miss Johnston, blue silk blouso and silk voile skirt; Mrs.' Meadows, pale pink silk. Excellent music was supplied by Miss Hawthorne. Mrs. Izott, who has been this- guest of Mrs. Chas. Izard for a week, returned to Wanganui yesterday. - Mrs Ally is now staying at Mrs. Cruickshanks'. The Kelburne Bowling Club'is to. have its formal' opening on Wednesday"'afternoon. Next Saturday Sir Joseph Ward will be present at the Thorndon . Bowling Green to declare tho season open., y.
