' What is known as .the substitution game is supposed to bo played out in most. countries, and it is not.a compliment to Now Zealand poople that it is so rife in tho Dominion. When a customer asks for some well known advertised article of merit, like Dr. Williams's l'ink Pills for instauce, the usual plan is for the seller to bring forward some other articlf at a cheaper price, with a statement that it ii "just tho same," or "just as good," or some' thing of the kind. There's this peculiarity, however. Tho salesman doesn't try this with nil customers. Those who look as if they were sharp and knew what was wanted, generally get what they ask for.. It is those whom the. shopman thinks arc easv. that the game is tried on with. There are so many shops where these conditions do not prevail that people are foolish to take their trade where they have trouble in getting what thej want, y^OS
