Dr. Bell, Government Geologist, who has been engaged in.the geological survey of tho Whangaroa scction, states that a careful investigation has disclosed copper, iron, and mercury ores, which, amongst other mineral features, will in due courso bo reported 011. Tho copper deposits are sulphide ores suitable for pyrito smelting, and givo most favourable indications. The deposits occur somo four miles south of the harbour, near Kaeo Settlement. Iron and petroleum shale wore • met with near Waimato North and south of Whangaroa, and'mercury has been observed at Ohacawai. In addition, building stone and basalts wero investigated near tho coast, and these include a marblo which possibly may open up an important industry in the district. Copper ore and deposits of iron wero found in small quantities within throe miles of tbo North Capo,
