The members of the Pongaroa Rifle Club met on October 7, to fire for the club cup, at 200, 500, and GOO.vds., with an optional sighter. Tho weather was not very favourable, and consequently low scores were recorded. The competition was the first of the club's new season's series; the cup has entered 011 its second year, and out' of thirteen competitions eleven members have ono " leg-in " and two members have two "legs-in," aud there remain only about five members who havo not yet scored a win in the competition, a fact which speaks very favourably for the handicapping of the president. Three " legs-in" are required to carry off the cup, and A. Herbert, who has two, was just proventcd from obtaining his third in this competition, as the following scores show: — 200 500 600 yds. yds, yds. H'p. T'l. A. M'Donald ... 24 24 25 21 94 A. Haines's medal, at 200, 500, and 600 yds. The annjial meeting of the club was held in the evening, the president (Mr. A. Herbert) in tho chair. The secretary presented tho annual report and balance-sheet, which showed the club to be in ii very satisfactory condition, having assets to tho value of about .£2O. Tho balance-sheet was adopted and general satisfaction was expressed with the secretary's work. The president and secretary was unanimously re-elected to their respective positions, anil Messrs. H. Reed, T. Boardman, and F. Brenton were elected a committee, with the president and secretary ex officio. Owing to the general improvement in the shooting, and a consequent reduction of ■ handicaps,- it was resolved to abolish the standard. It was also resolved that, owing to the many difficulties connected with tho firing of the musketry courso as laid down for Defence Rifle Clubs, and tho inadequate recompense for same, the club would not attempt to qualify this year. It 1 was also decided to compete in the 1909 "Daily Mail" Empire Day Cup Competition. OPAKI iRIFLE CLUB. (by TEi.EODiru.—sricur, corrispondknt.) Masierton, October 11. The 'first trophy match of tho season of the Opaki Rifle ' Club, which was commenced on' Thursday last, was completed • yesterday in fino weather.
