MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

POLICE CASES,

(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M )

A youth was charged with (1) having, in or about May, 1908, at Wellington, committed theft of one volt meter valued at £1 Is., the property'of Turnbull and Jones, electricians; (2) in or about August, 190S, having committed theft of one volt meter value £1 Is., the property of Turnbull and Jones; and (3) on May 1, at Wellington, having committed theft ,of two bronze press buttons . value 14s. 9d,, the pioperty of Turnbull and Jones.

Chief Detective M'Grath informed the Court, that accused was an apprentice to electrical engineering, and was in the habit of going messiges to Turnbull and , Jones's. Whilst on these errands ho took the articles mentioned in the charges. His Worship entered a conviction, and ordered accused to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition that the ar : tides stolen were returned to the owners.

John Edmund Mudgway appeared in answer to a charge of having, on October 6, at Wadestown, stolen one grate valued at 10s., tlio property of Frederick Wilton. It was stated by the police that accused, an expressman, was in the habit of going into the suburbs and collecting bottles and old iron when business was slack. He took the grato from a paddock opposito Mr. Wilton's house, and sold it fo. - 2s. A conviction, with order to come up for . sentence when called upon, was entered, on condition that accused paid the value of the grate. Wm. Egan, charged with ihsobriety, was convicted and -fined 205., in default 7 days' imprisonment j and John Driscoll, similarly charged, was convicted and fined 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment; Three first offenders were convicted and fined 55., in default 24 hours' imprisonment. John Miller was charged on remand (1) with insobriety, and (2) with entering licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order. Defendant was convicted and was fined 20s. on each charge, with costs 75., in default 7 days' imprisonment.

At the Mount Cook Police Court on Saturday morning, before Mr. Thomas Bland, J.l'., George Hastings, for drunkenness, was fined 10s., in default 48 hours', imprisonment.
