THE PATEENA FIRE.
DISCOVERED AT SEA. As reported yesterday, an outbreak of firo occurred on the Union Company's steamer I'ateena, which arrived during the early hours of tho morning from Nelson and Picton. The Firo Brigade were summoned, and arrived with tho chemical engine, no time being lost in getting the fumes to work, with satisfactory results. At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, while tho vessel ivas en route from Picton to Wellington, about fivo or six miles from Tory Channel, the second engineer, who was on duty, noticed a lot of smoke. Investigation proved that a firo had started in tho after hatch, where 140 bales of hops and 30 tons of general cargo were stored. Tho hold was immediately fixed down, and, on arrival at Wellington at '2.45 a.m. yesterday, tho services of the Fire Brigado were requisitioned. The damage was not at all extensive, and the Pateena left for Picton and Nelson as usual yesterday. What caused tho firo is not known, and up to a late hour yesterday the amount of the insurance on tho cargo damaged had not been ascertained.
