NAVAL SUBSIDY. . DEFENDED BY MR. REID. (BT TSI.FGRAFII—rKESS ASSOCIATION—COriRIuIIT.) (Ree. October 8, 1 a.m.) Molbourne, October 7. In the debate on Mr. Ewing's Australian Defence Bill, Mr. Reid (Opposition), criticising Mr. Deakin's naval scheme, said that if Australia wanted to' go in for a naval 6chemo, let her do so; but there was no nocessity to. endeavour to get out of the payment of the naval subsidy of £200,000 a year for the magnificent protection thoy got from the British fleet for it. The British fleet would bo sufficient for the next ten years, supplemented by the present defence force, enlarged and improved.
